Ultra X-Connect UV series 500watt Modular PSU

This glossy charcoal black 500 Watt ATX power supply system comes complete with transparent green uv panels to compliment the two 80m uv green low noise fans and nine X-Connect cables along with a dual dongle SATA cable. Speaking of cables, these cables are customizable to suite any rig to eliminate wire clutter and give the user a better wire management solution. Simply plug in the desired amount of cables to handle your power needs. No more stashing dormant un-used power cables.
Ultra X-Connect power supplies have been known for there outstanding performance at generating full wattage continuously 100% of the time. This system offers drop out free performance giving full power at all times. This exclusive feature known as Continuous Power System ensures your +12v rail remains at +12v no matter how much load is put on the PSU.

Opening the retail box we find a manual and the box that contains the cables, power cord and PSU installation screws. You will get 9 cables consisting of everything you need to install this on a 20-pin ATX system.

Cables included are a 4-pin Intel Motherboard power cable, 20-pin ATX power cable, 6-Pin Xeon power cable, 4-pin power cables, Y-cable with floppy drive 4 pin power connector, Y-cable with two SATA connectors.

This system contains a 20-pin ATX power connector, if you are like me and need a 24-pin connector for Prescott systems, you will have to purchase this separately as Ultra does not include this cable with the retail box. Also not included is the new PCI-Express 6-pin power dongle. If you are running a PCI-E graphics card needing a +12v 6-pin PCI-Express power, you will need to wait till Ultra releases one in retail or find a hard to get gender changer to allow use of the new power connector.

Here we show the difference in the 20-pin and 24-pin power connectors. While we have a need for the 24-pin connector, some of you will require the 20-pin connector for older systems. Ultra, said they are in no hurry to put out a 6-pin PCI-Express connector, so until then, we PCX user's will have to wait. For our test's we used a generic gender changer to get the job done.

Basically the connectors that plug into the power supply are regular 4-pin molex style inverted connector. While a super design the cables do not have a locking tab or locking device so the connector can come loose if one tweaks around in side their box. We would like to see these snap into place or at least have some type of locking clip to prevent this from happening.

The Ultra X-Connect 500 Watt PSU Technical Feed Back

Out of the box we are looking at a serious power supply. The amperage ratings on the voltage rails are outstanding in that their will be plenty of torque behind the power output. Utilizing Ultra's X-Connect Continuous Power System you are getting continuous wattage output 100% of the time.
Supporting Pentium 4 and AMD platforms, meeting ATX v2.03, ATX 12volt Version 1.2 specifications. Ultra offers short circuit protection, in-rush protection and thermal overload cutoff protection ensures your system will be protected from most disasters. The MTBF rate is huge with over 100,000 hours at full load.

Unpacking the Ultra, we can see ours is charcoal black with UV green transparent panels. Wooow! What a nice power supply. The weight is average for a typical PSU of this rating. I can't wait to get past the shipping material, this PSU looks superb. Right away we can see innovative looks, performance and style.

Once we got down the the bare product are in awe at the way this PSU looks. The charcoal black and uv green panels set's this bad boy into a class of its own. Then add the fact this PSU uses a customized cable technology, giving the user the option to use only the power cables needed for each device.

Attention to details include a master power switch and AC input socket made of UV green to match the panels. Inside the housing we can see two 80mm super quiet uv green fans. The color scheme is just amazing, charcoal black and UV green always look great together and this is no exception.

On top we can see a sweet looking chrome logo, mounted over one of the 80's we mentioned earlier. Also each connector is protected by rubber plugs, protecting the connectors until they are needed. We had a little issue with these being very loose and did not stay on and rendered them near useless when handling the unit. While this is insignificant, we feel this issue should be addressed.

Taking a look at the rear of the psu we can see the cool looking effect the UV green components give the overall looks. On the side panel we can see the circuitry and wiring harness. With such awesome looks and design we can get enough of this PSU. We only wish we had one of each color to see just how effective the three choices are.

The finish produces a mirror like effect and because of this finger prints can be a real issue with installing this psu. Finger prints stick out like a soar thumb and to keep the original shine and beauty you will have to clean it after you install it. Some of you will use gloves - good for you. Glancing inside the panel we can see the twin capacitors that help store energy. Beyond the caps you can see part of the aluminum heat sink designed to cool the output transformers. Amazing!

34Amp rails anyone? That's right on the +12v side you will get 34Amps to crank out the power under the most extreme benchmark or D3D gaming title. You get constant power with peek performance thanks to the leverage beyond the power output. On the 5v rail we get a huge 30Amp rating right on down to the +3.3v rail leveraging a respectable 28Amps. This psu gets about a 70% efficiency rating at full load.

Here's the best part about this psu. The modular cables! The cable system on this PSU is a trend settings first. While other companies are now doing this, Ultra led the way by offering the first modular psu on the market and with this revision and UV color choices, the best just keeps getting better.

Here we can see the connecting port which allows you to connect the cables to the desired output connector. We loaded ours out for illustration purposes, but for the most part you will not need to use the Xeon cable if you do not have a Xeon system.

Hands down this is the best looking psu we have ever seen period! Pictures dont do the PSU justice, granted we got some great shots full and vibrant, but the psu is best appreciated in person. Now that we showed you the PSU itself, below show's you the other options and colors you can choose from...
