Albatron Radeon HD 4770 Video Card Version Review
Written by Mavke
Sunday, 07 June 2009

We are looking at the Albatron Radeon HD 4770, which is a middle class video card with the newest ATI graphics chipset and will compare it in both synthetic and games benchmarks to see how this card stands overall. This is also the first attempt from ATI using the newest 40nm process which is the next step into the future. As such they are gaining some experience before rolling this out to their upcoming high-end new generation graphics cards. Next to that it comes at a low price tag, which will give them an edge over de competition and renew the battle on the mid-range segment. Will it be able to dethrone the Radeon HD 4830 which was the best price to performance video card for quite a while? - ShopTalk

So AMD introduced the Radeon HD 4770 as a very good price to performance solution, and its goal is mainly to replace the older Radeon HD 4830, which is already on the market but on an older technology. The memory bus was reduced on the Radeon HD 4770 to 128-bit only, because it's impossible to fit a 256-bit interface bus, like the Radeon HD 4830 has on a die size this little. Having a 128-bit bus also helps having a lower production price. AMD hopes to reduce this bus inconvenience by using the cards with GDDR5 memory which provides twice as high bandwidth than the older more commonly used GDDR3 memory chips.

Albatron made a very nice external cardboard box which is not really exceptional but rather general practise. The frontal part of their package is red themed with some girl in a special costume on it. Inside the box, we can find the card sitting and it is packed in an anti-static bag. The board differs from the reference design from ATI and features a transparent cooler with a plastic frame around it. The fan practically draws air into the copper circular cooler and cools it completely. The transparent cooler is silent, and it is fixed to the copper heatsink. And even with the heatsink being large, the graphics card remains very light and firm.

Working with this video board was a pleasure. We had no problems with drivers installation, their card runs very cool even at low fan speed, and the fan is very silent compared to other cards. This card also consumes very little and delivers performance over the Radeon HD 4830, though struggles a little with anti-aliasing modes, because of the reduced memory bus. But the most important part is the price, which is also low and because of this we just recommend this card to all people that want to achieve good performance while spending less compared to a high-end video card. In our opinion, this card will become very fast a great seller.
