NVIDIA is finalizing its 40nm chips and it is about to start shipping a new card based on the NV216 chip. We are talking about a cheap board branded as the GeForce GT 220 and this card should most likely replace their GeForce 9500 series. The video card has a 128-bit memory interface and it comes with 1GB of GDDR3 memory. It should cost slightly over $50 and the first shipment of chips should be available in late June, at least according to their partners. It's possible that you'll see these cards in retail later in the summer, but at least they are real and NVIDIA has some 40nm chips to show and sell. The first 40nm steps are not easy, and its very possible that there will be a mobile variation. - FudZilla NVIDIA GeForce GT 220, Be First Retail 40nm Version
In fact NVIDIA's first desktop 40nm chip is finished. It is called NV218 and should most likely end up with the GeForce GT 210 brand. So far this chip is OEM only, and it is currently shipping to big OEM's such as Acer and Dell. The channel doesn't have them yet, since the board is an entry level product with an 64-bit memory interface and a 4-layer PCB, so it should be a very inexpensive graphics card. In retail NVIDIA is still selling the GeForce 9500 series as the key chips in this category, being 55nm. This is NVIDIA's first 40nm chip and it is DirectX 10, but there is a big chance that it even supports DirectX 10.1 technology. As such the battle is on again since both ATI and NVIDIA have now adopted the 40nm which is the step towards the next wave of high-end products which should support DirectX 11 and get released near the end of the year when also Windows 7 will hit the streets.
