Well NVIDIA continues to use well known system of price drops and remarking of old graphics card models which resulted in some new products that are better positioned on the market. This praxis had created situations where certain cards, like the GeForce 8800 GTS with G92 chip, have achieved very long shelf life. The model that was presented at the end of 2007 isn't too much different compared to their new mid-class model, the GeForce GTS 250. Beside the fact that this new GeForce GTS 250 uses the same chip as the almost two year old GeForce 8800 GTS, NVIDIA decided to ditch the cooling used on the GeForce 9800 GTX cards and instead used a cheaper and smaller cooling solution. - InsideHW Zotac GeForce GTS 250 AMP! Model Graphics Review
Now this is not really that big of a problem since the graphics card is significantly smaller which means this cooling solution is perfect fit for an 55nm GPU chipset. The specified frequencies from NVIDIA are 738MHz core, 1836MHz shaders and 2200MHz memory clock speed. If those numbers seems familiar, you are not wrong. Identical frequencies as the GeForce 9800 GTX model, and as such the details are just similar as well. Zotac knew that this GPU cannot overclock too much without investment into better cooling so it raised the frequency only by 12MHz compared to default values, while the memory was raised higher. So should you purchase such Zotac GeForce GTS 250 AMP! edition? If you are a proud owner of a GeForce 9800 GTX than you already know the answer, there is no point in doing that. This model is actually in very inconvenient position, and our impression is that it is created just to fill up holes in NVIDIA's product line-up so there will be no similar models that belong to different product generations. On the other hand if you are searching for just a mid-class single GPU graphics card this can be very interesting choice. At least, when nothing else is going on, we are glad that NVIDIA decided to offer only GeForce GTX 200 series products.
