NVIDIA 40nm Taped Out With Aiming Second Quarter!
Written by Mavke
Friday, 23 January 2009

According to our well informed sources, NVIDIA's next generation 40nm chip has been taped out and is getting ready for its launch. There will be at least two new 40nm units and NVIDIA is aiming for a launch in early second quarter of the year. Some sources indicate that NVIDIA might even make it to March, which is the last month of this quarter but this will be a tough thing to achieve. ATI has also taped out its 40nm based RV740 mainstream chip and it looks that NVIDIA plans to launch entry level and mainstream products first before it goes to 40nm with high-end. Currently it looks it won't be until at least summer time, roughly early third quarter, before we see new high-end cards, at least from ATI. - FudZilla

From what we know so far the 40nm process wouldn't bring too huge changes from NVIDIA really as they would be relying on their actual architecture, though that has not as such confirmed. The main info sofar is that NVIDIA is quite happy with their current design and logic, which does poing in the direction to continue on that basis. From an ATI point that might be different, but since they have had the edge last year we do tend to believe that major change are neither to be expected. Though ATI has really done outstanding and might just want to keep that up for another year and take some greater market share once again.
