NVIDIA's Duo GT200 55nm Sandwich Design Sampled
Written by Mavke
Friday, 12 December 2008

We've learned that dual GT200 cards have been sampled and you can even catch some pictures on some Chinese websites. It is a dual, sandwich board design, an approach that NVIDIA fancies for a while and naturally the card should end up significantly faster than both the Radeon HD 4870 X2 and GeForce GTX 280. The board will draw a lot of power and it will be hot, but at the same time, it might win the performance crown back for NVIDIA, and NVIDIA is desperate to get it back. NVIDIA simply doesn't know how to work as an underdog, this card and a new driver for the GeForce GTX 260 card is actually dramatically changes the odds. Yes, changing the odds more in favor of NVIDIA this time around. - FudZilla

At this time, we are not aware of any faster Radeon HD 4870 X2 card that might come to jump on top of the dual GT200 55nm though we wouldn't completely exclude the possibility. Sources also confirmed that in order to see the real power of the dual GT200 55nm sandwich board you would have to use at least a medium widescreen resolution with all settings on, or preferably those lovely 30inch resolutions, something that few can afford these days. Other rumors on the internet state that this card will have 1792MB of GDDR3 memory, 480 stream processors and a 896-bit memory interface. Somehow doubling up the Stakes.

Previous reports stated that this card will have twice 216 stream processors due to the fact that we are talking about two GeForce GTX 260 GPU's, but you must bear in mind that these specs are still not confirmed. If these rumors are true, it looks like NVIDIA will keep its card away from GDDR5 memory. The power consumption of this sandwich card is rumored to be 289W and it has both 8-pin and 6-pin power connectors. It should show its face on January 8th, just in time for CES which takes place around that time.
