MSI GeForce 9800 GT 512MB Gaming Version Review
Written by Mavke

Today, we have a chance to take a close look at the GeForce 9800 GT from MSI. This graphics processing unit is the once from the Gaming series, which comes in a bit under $150. The GeForce 9800 GT is, as you can probably guess, the successor to the GeForce 8800 GT, released little over a year ago. This offering from MSI is a factory overclocked board with better specs than the GeForce 8 series card had to offer. Though it does use the same technology as previously though slightly optimized. We don't expect too much difference in performance, though the price has gone down with these new series which is all the better for end user who can enjoy some great gaming experience. - Legit Reviews

Where MSI brings this GeForce 9800 GT in at 660MHz core, 1900MHz memory and 1625MHz shader clock speed, which a sweet increase versus the reference clocks. Both the GeForce 8800 GT and the GeForce 9800 GT card have 112 stream processor and a 256-bit memory interface. The front of the MSI GeForce 9800 GT has an attractive fan shroud with the MSI and Gaming series logos, the model number, as well as a peek at the red PCB. Up top, you see the connector for the SLI bridge. Over on the right side, you see the single 6-pin PCI Express power connection and it comes with it own cooling design as well.

A quick look at the features list on the front of the box tells us this unit has 512MB of GDDR3 memory, and is both HybridPower and PhysX ready. On the back of the box, we find a great deal of information about the card, including the features and minimum system requirements. With a factory overclocked card, anything beyond that is simply a bonus when it comes to overclocking. Though all of the enthusiasts out there know, there's usually a little more left if you can squeeze it out. Pushing it northward a little at a time, we found that we could get a stable overclock of 725/2000MHz with the shaders running at 1785MHz.

The price range this card falls into is a pretty tough fight, with a large number of cards from both ATI and NVIDIA sparring for this market segment. And at $105 shipped from Newegg the MSI GeForce 9800GT offers some serious bang for the buck. If you are looking for a card to play most current games on medium or slightly higher settings, this card is an excellent choice. Throw in the fact that this card does an awesome job running Folding@Home, and it makes it an even easier selection for us. We didn't think this card would be one to change the world, but MSI has added some nice touches and done a great job on this card.
