BFG GeForce 9800 GX2 1GB Graphics Design Review

We're going to start with this, if you have $1000 in your video card budget, two of these is a great idea. If you have $500 and one PCI Express slot, one of these is a great idea. If the above doesn't apply to you, then you shouldn't really bother with this video card. We say don't bother, because for the first time ever, SLI'ed cheaper cards are a better deal. Granted, two GeForce 9800 GTX's costs a little more, but you're already looking to spend more on a single aspect of your machine than many people are willing to spend on their entire computer. But even if you're only building a dream machine, this card makes a sweet read. This stock BFG GeForce 9800 GX2 is still a marvel of gaming force. - TechLounge

Taking the style of the GeForce 9800 GTX to heart, the GX2 card is completely wrapped into its heatsink. The top is all vents and a single SLI connector, near small exhaust vents out the back. There are two DVI connectors, one upside down and an HDMI socket. The front of the card is slotted for air intake, and here's to it not being as obstructive as it looks. Also at the top are two power connectors, one 6-pin and one 8-pin, connectors once firmly ATI. Each plug is translucent and backlit, red means the video card is angry and the not properly powered, green means you did everything right.

It would be very, very hard not to covet this video card. We know we recently said that the GeForce 9800 GTX was the sexy card, but this one might actually look nicer, eye of the beholder and all. And it's not just skin deep, this card is fast, and because of that, we can overlook its frightening heat production and power consumption. But it isn't a bargain. Thanks to price warring, it's in the you gotta be crazy and not the price is no question bracket, and because of that, it'll get more attention than it might deserve. It's compelling, after all especially the idea of quad SLI mode, which is combining a total of four GPU's for processing.

Not that we'd turn one down, but the people for whom it makes sense are fewer than the people that can afford it. That is to say, it's a great piece of hardware, but it's only a good idea in the strictest of circumstances. Basically, it boils down to this. Do you want quad SLI? Or, do you only have one PCI Express slot? Great, go for it. It's just, if you've got to decide between one GeForce 9800 GX2 and two GeForce 9800 GTX's, go for the latter. We're glad NVIDIA has finally pulled off SLI on a stick, and it's a killer upgrade, but it's just not the killin'est.
