Half-Life 2 - Bug Attack
Written by JRd1st

ActionTrip has reported that there's a nasty bug in Half-Life 2, but there's also a work-around to get you going. I'd post other news... if there were any. It seems inevitable that you'll hear a lot about Half-Life 2 today. Understandably might I add. Here's a few morsels of info that some might find particularly useful...

It appears that the game has a nasty bug that they didn't squash even with all the release candidates. Here's how you can work around it. This fix provided by Valve's Erik Johnson courtesy of VE3D.com:

For people that are running into the bug on startup that looks like:
"Map Version is 0, expecting 19"

Try this to see if it works:

1. Go into your SteamSteamApps folder.
2. Rename the file called sourcemodels.gcf to something else.
3. Relaunch the game.

This is going to require a redownload of this file, but if you want to get playing tonight it's probably the best path. There are a couple of people now that were in this situation that were fixed this way.

As soon as we possible we'll release a fix for this that will not require this workaround.

Please let me know if this does or does not fix this specific problem for you. Just shoot me an e-mail at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it If this does fix it, it would be useful to get copies of a couple of the renamed (bad) cache files
.

Not much of a workaround, but it'll have to do for now. Also, I have been experiencing sound bugs while jumping or moving in the water. Here's what Valve has to say on the matter, courtesy of Shacknews.com:

If experiencing jumping sound in-game:
"You might want to try lowering your texture detail to medium if it's on high."

On dodgy Nvidia 5.1 sound:
"nVidia is working on a driver update to get 5.1 sound working properly."

If you have a problem with the game:
Submit a report.

That sound bug is really annoying and it looks like there's no other way around it than to lower the texture quality, which I'm certainly not going to do.
