ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 (R700) Launch in Mid-August
Written by Mavke
Monday, 21 July 2008

The dual chip, Radeon HD 4870 X2 card is aiming for mid-August launch which serious availability toward early September. AMD plans yet another hard launch and it currently waits for the final driver. We believe that the launch driver for the Radeon HD 4870 X2 is Catalyst 8.8 and there is a beta of this driver available for testing purposes but its still not certified or polished enough for launch. With this launch, AMD should officially dethrone NVIDIA from the performance leader place but we are sure that NVIDIA works night and day to launch its 55nm reaction to this dual chip beast. From all we know, the Radeon HD 4870 X2 is faster than the GeForce GTX 280+ in most scenarios. - FudZilla

According to the not so confidential, at least not any more as some slides that were already posted, the R700 Spartan also known as the Radeon HD 4870 X2 with 2GB of GDDR5 memory might be launched on 12th of August, just as we wrote earlier. The card should appear in retail sometime during the second half of August. Other noted details from the slides confirm that the card will indeed come with 2GB of memory, and that it will support DisplayPort, so we might see those as soon as partners get the green light to make their own designs.
