AMD Radeon HD 4800 Series Launching on June 25th
Written by Mavke
Friday, 06 June 2008

ATI will launch its Radeon HD 4850 and Radeon HD 4870 cards on the 25th of June. It is the last week of June, and the date was the original that we've implied. There might be some ATI activities before that date, but the official launch with retail availability will indeed only be the 25th of this month. NVIDIA should be launching on Tuesday, the 17th of June, assuming the retail availability of both the GeForce GTX 280 and GeForce GTX 260 versions. The cards will end up quite fast, much faster than previous RV670 cards, especially with anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering turned on, as the RV770 does anti-aliasing the way it should and not via shaders. We heard it should run much faster. - FudZilla

The RV770 doesn't need that much power, as ATI advises its people to use a 450W power supply for the Radeon HD 4850 based systems. And this 450W should be enough for the whole system and this sounds quite tiny for current computer setups. The good thing is that weaker power supplies are usually more quiet and this is something that most people do appreciate. The Radeon HD 4850, is not exactly cold running, but at the same time, its single slot cooler does the job though we believe that it is at the same time really stretched. But the 450W is still damn good, and of course, this is for the whole computer.
