While reading on Hardware Avenue I found the following preview on the nVidia GeForce Go 6800. When was the last time you sat down and had a good game session on your laptop? No, I'm not talking about Tetrinet, I'm aiming more in the vicinity of Doom3, or Far Cry.
nVidia GeForce Go 6800 Technology Preview
First off the bat, the GeForce Go 6800 will feature some pretty impressive specifications, even higher than the 6800Ultra is some departments. The mobile GPU should see speeds up to 450MHz for the core (but with 12 pipelines, not 16) and 550MHz for the RAM (In 128-Bit and 256-Bit configs), although 600MHz, according to nVidia, is apparently the maximum RAM clock supported. The idea here is core and RAM speeds will vary depending on the laptop, probably as low as 300MHz for the core and 300MHz for the RAM, so the Geforce Go 6800 could create a new factor (read: annoyance) in laptop shopping, that is, which model has which frequency ratings.
Could it be that your next LAN party game machine, or personal multimedia workstation is actually a laptop? The somewhat rigid nature of laptops as far as future upgrades go will certainly keep a few gamers and multimedia enthusiasts at bay, but by the looks of things we could be seeing highend laptop performance very similar to high end desktop performance in every task imaginable very soon thanks to the implementation of such chips as the PCI-Express based Geforce Go 6800, all in a briefcase sized computer.
The high price will always be there though, so such advancements in the laptop market are somewhat reserved for the higher spenders, nevertheless it is an exciting time for laptop users who want a boost in system capabilities, it seems the next generation of mobile 3D accelerators lead by nVidia's Geforce Go 6800 will really shape the way we think about the world of mobile computing. Whether or not ATI can match their efforts is another matter, but it seems nVidia at least have a lead release wise, as laptops based on the Geforce Go 6800 are apparently ready to ship as you read this.
The PureVideo issue is still not 100% certain when concerning the Geforce Go 6800, so it be something you'll want to pay attention to. We will endeavour to enquire about the Geforce Go 6800 and PureVideo with nVidia so make sure to check back for any official response. |
