Palit GeForce 8600 GT 1GB Super+ Graphics Review

We are sure quite a lot of you have never head of Palit before. Before we were approached by them we had never heard of them either. Palit is not a new company, but they have done business almost entirely overseas. Now they are offering their products also in the United States. They offer both AMD video cards as well as NVIDIA based cards. They were nice enough to provide us a GeForce 8600 GT 1GB Super+ graphics card. And this card you could already find out yourself is not just a standard GeForce 8600 GT, cause it comes with a lot more memory and features the Super+ suffix. So a special card which is something that Palit has been doing quite regularly with great success. - ThinkComputers

Palit's packaging is what you would expect from a video card manufacturer. It looks like their mascot is a mechanical frog. The back of the packaging lists the technical specifications in a ton of different languages. The first thing that caught our attention when unpacked the card was the unusual cooling system. Most video cards have a low profile integrated coolers with a small fan. Palit uses a large fan with a circular style heatsink. It reminds us a lot of a Zalman cooler. The fan and heatsink are open, not like the closed systems that use shrouds on other cards. This will allow for better airflow and make it easier to clean.

The heatsink is so large it takes up two slots, much like many other video cards. The heatsink on the cooler is very large, so large that it does a good job in covering up the memory. To keep the memory even cooler Palit has installed some memory heatsinks on the backside of the card. As we said this heatsink design is a lot different from other cards we have checked out, it will be interesting to see if there is a big difference in cooling performance. You will also notice that there is no PCI Express power connection on the card. Almost every GeForce 8600 GT based graphics card will not need an external power source.

The Palit GeForce 8600 GT performed well in our tests and we did not have any problems playing games with it. The GeForce 8600 GTS obviously outperformed the GeForce 8600 GT because it has a higher GPU clock speed. We wish we would have been able to check out the Palit GeForce 8600 GT against another GT card, as we're sure that 1GB of memory would have made some difference in our benchmarks. Both cards can be found online for about $150, so performance wise we would have to go with the GeForce 8600 GTS. You are paying extra money for the 1GB of onboard memory.

You can pickup a Palit GeForce 8600 GT 256MB for $99 and the 512MB version for $119. We would like to point out that the cooler, while different from other cards it is much quieter and cools the GPU better than other cards out there. So all together the Palit GeForce 8600 GT 1GB Super+ edition is a great card which should do well in frame buffer intensive games, although it might come a bit short on the graphics processing. Though if memory is what you need, then this card can we warmly recommended.
