nVidia GeForce Go 6800 Preview
Written by Mavke

HardOCP has published a preview on the nVidia GeForce Go 6800. Playing the latest and greatest 3D games on a notebook is something that is relatively new. Certainly we have been able to it for a while, but not at the quality levels that many of us require for what we now consider a minimum level of IQ inside a solid gaming experience. ATI has been the company that has held our attention in the mobile gaming realm for a couple of years now with their Mobility Radeon product line.

ImagenVidia GeForce Go 6800 Preview

The GeForce Go 6800 is truly a solution that shows nVidia has gained the needed ground on their competition to not only match their performance but also surpass them. But having one sample part does not mean anything in this land of paper launches. A href="http://www.nvidia.com" target=_blank>nVidia has promised that notebooks from Sager and Prostar with 6800 technology will be available almost immediately. Hopefully the GeForce Go 6800 will not end up being another "all show and no go" part and as we have seen in the past, as nVidia has promised that will not be the case. You should be able to start purchasing systems very soon that contain a GeForce Go 6800 series GPU.

Many today will herald the coming of a PCI-Express GPU for notebooks, but the fact of the matter is that unless you crack open your notebook and start counting traces, you will likely never see any difference as the performance delta between PCIE and AGP systems is currently indistinguishable. The transition to PCI-Express does bring some benefit currently though, even though it is not seen in terms of performance, yet. As notebook builders are implementing this new standard, it gives companies like ATI and nVidia a chance to push forth their slotted mobile technologies, which of course will one day filter down to end users being able to upgrade their mobile graphics card, much like we do currently in our desktop systems.

While we are "ooing" and "ahing" over the GeForce Go 6800 and its stellar gaming performance that you have seen here, ATI does have their next-gen M28 part waiting in the wings. They did offer to get us a preview of their technology to compare with the 6800 the moment they learned we would presenting the Go 6800 to you today. Their launch will be later this month but I am unsure if the M28 is anywhere near being ready for retail sale like the GeForce Go 6800 is. We did not want to cover the M28 as it just seemed as if ATI was trying to steal some of nVidia's thunder with a paper launch part. That said, we think the M28 will be up to pace with the GeForce Go 6800 when it finally gets to market.

The GeForce Go 6800 is undoubtedly the best mobile GPU we have every gamed with. The GeForce Go 6800 provided a better gaming experience than we see on many desktop computers. nVidia has something special in the GeForce Go 6800 and we hope to be seeing more notebooks using the technology soon as it will only help push LAN gaming and the experience that goes along with it out to the masses.
