NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT G92 Graphics Card Review

The NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT is based on the new NVIDIA G92 GPU. This is basically a tweaked and G80 silicon die-shrinked using the 65nm process technology. This allows NVIDIA to cramp even more transistors into the die and yet produce a smaller chip. According to NVIDIA, the graphics core in the new G92 GPU remains essentially unchanged from the G80. Of course, the number of transistors in the graphics core will depend on the number of stream processors. The increase in transistor count in the NVIDIA G92 GPU is actually due to the new PureVideo HD video processor integrated into the new GPU.

The NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT is a single slot card that is slightly shorter than the GeForce 8800 GTX. But it looks like a very sleek card, thanks to the black plastic shroud which make it look slim. The shroud extends from the bracket to the far end of the card, ending with what appears to be tiny vents. Incidentally, the GeForce 8800 GT is the first graphics card in the world to support PCI Express 2.0 with 32 lanes. When used with a motherboard that supports PCI Express 2.0, the GeForce 8800 GT will have effectively double the bandwidth of standard PCI Express cards, but that doesn't mean the card will be twice as fast.

Our benchmark results show that the GeForce 8800 GT is really fast. In fact, it is almost as fast as the GeForce 8800 GTX graphics card. This is really an amazing achievement because the GeForce 8800 GTX costs more then twice as much as the GeForce 8800 GT. In fact, it will probably be more cost effective to buy two GeForce 8800 GT cards and run them in SLI than buy a GeForce 8800 GTX or the even more expensive GeForce 8800 Ultra. The NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT is also a more compelling choice than the older GeForce 8800 series cards because it is the first card to feature the VP2 video processor.

It is also the first GeForce 8800 card to be fabricated on the 65 nm process technology, which allows for a smaller, cooler and faster GPU. The result is a truly compelling mid-range graphics card, offering a tremendous amount of processing power but without the high cost associated with the higher-end GeForce 8800 graphics cards. If you do not already own a GeForce 8800 series card, this is definitely one you should consider, especially to play DirectX 10 games. We are most impressed with the performance and affordability, and we hope this will encourage NVIDIA to offer more cards of such caliber and value.
