NVIDIA's new G98 Graphics Core is Mainstream Chip
Written by Mavke
Tuesday, 21 August 2007

Since several readers came back and asked us what is exactly the G98, mentioned in previous stories. Well the answer is short and sweet. The G98 is the new mainstream part with enhanced and more wide memory controller, going head to head with ATI's own RV670 upcoming chip. The G98 is all that G83, a more mature GeForce 8600 was supposed to be, but failed to deliver. A while ago, a rumour about GeForce 8600 with 256-bit controller appeared on the market. That part is no other but the G98, even though the GeForce 8600 with 256-bit memory interface is a bit downplayed, and the G98 is significantly faster and has much more shader power. - The Inquirer

So these mid-range upcoming graphics cards are currently done under the codename G98. Not much is known about it, other than it won't sport a 128-bit controller, but a more advanced and faster 256-bit memory interface. These are real $199 cards, not those notebook parts that were dumped into the desktop market. It will take still a bit of time for these G98 chips to come on the market as the focus us currently mainly with the high-end range based upon the G92 graphics core. And a few sources have confirmed that NVIDIA already sent out an invitation for November launch of the G92.
