XGI Tech Volari V8 Review
Written by Mavke

Phoronix has published a review on the XGI Tech Volari V8. Graphics cards are one of the most heavily contested computer components, simply since a low-end card will give you unpleasant results while gaming. That is, if you can even get the game to run! However, not all graphics cards have to cost an entire paycheck to purchase. In today's review, we will try the reasonably priced XGI Volari V8 to see how well it can handle the Burdon of graphics in the workstation environment, and of course gaming.

Although the XGI Volari V8 wasn't the winner throughout the benchmarks (we didn't really expect it to outperform a 5900XT), we were fairly satisfied with the results when compared to an ATI 9250 and the Volari V3XT. A noticeable difference in performance could be noted, and to our surprise, performed quite well for only being a low to mid-range graphics solution.

However, when running any Futuremark product whether it is PCMark or 3DMark with either XGI product installed in one of our testbeds, the mouse would lock up. Although the mouse would lock up, and would remain un-usable until we rebooted the machine, the keyboard still operated. Being concerned about a possible conflict, a XGI technical support representative was contacted, but was apparently not aware of any software conflicts between XGI and Futuremark. If you need a graphics card now and are un-able to wait for XGI's new line of cards being released in the next few months, but don't plan to do any major gaming, we would recommend you seriously consider the XGI Volari V8 due to its low/mid-range performance.

In addition, it has HDTV capabilities making it a perfect solution for a personal workstation or HTPC machine.
