We learned one more critical detail about the R600. The chip can and will support Quad setups. It will work with four cards. ATI has been working to solve the four card performance problem for a while. NVIDIA tried it and we checked the Quad SLI with two GeForce 7950 GX2 cards but we got super lame performances out of it. The power supply manufacturers are thrilled about four cards in a high-end machine as such a system will demand a lot of power, probably even more than 1000W. ATI can possibly push a frame or two with its alternate frame eendering marchitecture and make it more efficient than the split screen rendering. We will have to wait and see. - The Inquirer ATI's upcoming R600 supports Quad CrossFire setup
Of course the first real Quad technology for bundling the power of four graphics chips is still only shown by NVIDIA it certainly looks like ATI will give it a go as well and show of their Quad performance. Then again the G80 architecture also leaves the door open for another Quad implementation as each GeForce 8800 GTX features a total of two SLI interface connections, where only one of them is currently used. Some rumors are that this dual SLI interface would be used to bundle the power of more then two cards together. It sounds like in March some records are going to get broken.
