Foxconn GeForce 7950 GT 512MB OC Edition Review
Written by Mavke

What company first comes to mind when you think about NVIDIA video cards? Chances are you're thinking of either BFG, XFX, or EVGA. Today we'll be taking a look at a video card from an enormous company whom, ironically, you may not be that familiar with, Foxconn. Foxconn is one of the largest electronics and components manufacturers in the world. Chances are you own something Foxconn had a part in making. They produce Apple's iPod and Mac Mini, Intel branded motherboards, components for Dell, Hewlett Packard, and more... The reason Foxconn may not come to mind as a graphics card vendor is that they didn't enter the market until March of last year. - TheTechLounge

When we saw Foxconn's GeForce 7950 GT OC product packaging, we were impressed at the unique, perhaps bold, approach they took in terms of design. While most vendors have an aversion towards scantily clad virtual girls, Foxconn decided to get artsy...and we like it. The box has a slight texture to it and the graphics have all had a canvas filter of some sort applied to them, the result is really nice. Looking at the GeForce 7950 GT, we see the reference cooler with Foxconn's graphics applied. We can see on the front side of the card that the heatsink covers all of the memory chips.

After looking at our benchmark results, it's hard to really recommend one card over the other when it comes to the GeForce 7950 GT and Radeon X1900 XT. The majority of the time, performance is identical, though of course ATI still has the upper hand for being able to enable both HDR and AntiAliasing. To make things less complicated, ATI's Radeon X1900 XT isn't really available for purchase anymore, at least not for a competitive price. Foxconn's GeForce 7950 GT OC goes for $245, while the standard version of the card runs for $235. And with some rebate on these cards currently you can these even a bit cheaper.

But things aren't so cut and dry as they may seem, as the Radeon X1900 cards were replaced by Radeon X1950 variants. In this case, the Radeon X1900 XT was succeeded by the Radeon X1950 XT. And wouldn't you know it, it's priced to compete with the GeForce 7950 GT. Just ou luck, as we didn't have one to test. Nevertheless, we did a bit of research on the internet and while we don't have our own data to back it up, it looks like the Radeon X1950 XT puts a beating on the GeForce 7950 GT. And, did we mention it's about the same price as the GeForce 7950 GT? Don't go jumping to conclusions just yet...

If you've got about $250 to spend and you simply can not wait until for ATI and NVIDIA to release new cards, I have to recommend that you go for the Radeon X1950 XT over the GeForce 7950 GT. While Foxconn's GeForce 7950 GT OC and the bundle it comes with is really nice, there's no getting around the fact that the Radeon X1950 XT will get you better performance for the same price. The last thing we will say is that if you don't mind waiting until the March time frame, you should hold off on buying a new video card until then. We would also expect to see prices drop a bit on these cards as stores try to get rid of old stock.
