NVIDIA delays G80 chip, due to tweaks and fixes
Written by Mavke
Tuesday, 19 September 2006

A few independent sources confirmed that G80 chip might actually come even later than everyone expects. We all expected this chip in October or November but it looks like the chip might be delayed even further. We also know that the G80 tape out was a success and that the silicon is fine but NVIDIA probably wants to tweak its chip as much as it can as it has a nasty competitor to fight. The R600 chip looks really good on paper but the good news for NVIDIA is that ATI has already delayed its chip. Both are having to delay their next upcoming graphics chip, with NVIDIA just one step ahead. In the end it depends what the G80 core will bring exactly as raw performance. - The Inquirer

NVIDIA still has the performance crown with very successful GeForce 7950 GX2 dual chip card and ATI won't have anything that can beat it, at least not soon and not by the end of the year. ATI is hurting NVIDIA on the price front as the fastest ATI is around €400 while the fastest NVIDIA is set at €500 or so. And the worst thing is that Quad SLI performance still sucks so you can forget about the buying the second GeForce 7950 GX2 card. NVIDIA will probably start talking about G80 in October time and traditionally it will gather its loyal NDA press in the USA by the end of the year to reveal some secrets.
