NVIDIA is announcing two new graphics processing units (GPU's) based on the GeForce 7900 series architecture today, the GeForce 7900 GS and GeForce 7950 GT. Graphics cards based on the GeForce 7900 GS will be available immediately at prices ranging around $199, while the GeForce 7950 GT based graphics cards will be available as of 14th of September and range in price of around $299. The GeForce 7900 GS is a breakthrough of sorts as it becomes NVIDIA's first mid-range GPU to feature a 256-bit interface to graphics memory. Previous mid-range GPU's have relied on a 128-bit memory interface, which restricts performance and memory bandwidth. - nV News XFX and EVGA GeForce 7900 GS 256MB Preview
The GeForce 7950 GT on the other hand, will be replacing the GeForce 7900 GT. The GeForce 7950 GT is positioned in the lower high-end spectrum of GPU's and features a single slot design and 512MB of graphics memory. Both GPU's support dual link DVI and HDTV-out, while HDCP support is standard on the GeForce 7950 GT and is an optional feature on the GeForce 7900 GS. The GeForce 7900 GS and GeForce 7950 GT are certainly reaping the benefits from economies of scale in the GeForce 7900 series product line, which will eventually be succeeded by NVIDIA's next generation G80 GPU. The XFX GeForce 7900 GS model operates at a core clock of 480MHz and a memory clock of 1400MHz. Combined with a 256-bit memory interface and GDDR3 graphics memory, this model generates memory bandwidth in excess of 44GB/sec. The optimal frequencies detected by the overclocking applet in the new driver control panel consisted of a 528MHz core and 1592MHz memory. The EVGA e-GeForce 7900 GS KO operates at a core clock of 500MHz and a memory clock of 1380MHz. The optimal frequencies detected for this particular model were a core of 550MHz and memory of 1580MHz. The GeForce 7900 GS is an example of NVIDIA's commitment to the gamer who is looking for performance and features at a mainstream price. At $199, the GeForce 7900 GS provides a level of performance that until now has never been attained in this price range. Put two of them together and experience the ease of setup and usability of SLI along with performance that will be able to handle today's demanding games. With the GeForce 7900 GS, NVIDIA has delivered the most bang, boogie, and bling for the buck to the demanding gamer right now.
