ATI Radeon X1650 XT, RV560 based coming soon
Written by Mavke
Tuesday, 29 August 2006
ATI made some noise about its RV535 based Radeon X1650 PRO and there is one new card to fit into Radeon X1650 range. We don't have many details about the new card but we know it is based on the RV560 chip. The RV560 chip is nothing much more than the UMC chip, an 80 nanometre semiconductor with twelve pipelines. It will still be limited with the 128-bit memory interface but will end up faster than all Radeon X1600 XT based RV530 and the new Radeon X1650 PRO based on the RV535 shrink. The RV560 card will be branded as Radeon X1650 XT. The launch is scheduled for September, together with the RV570 based new Radeon X1950 generation card. - The Inquirer

This will give ATI some fuel to fight NVIDIA's very successful GeForce 7600 GS and GT series but we are sure that NVIDIA has some magic backed up in its silky sleeve. As you might know the GeForce 7600 chip currently has only 12 pipelines, but it seems there are 4 hidden pipelines who are hardware locked. You never know that NVIDIA has something in mind on that to hold their crown on the mid-range market. And than again, NVIDIA might still have some G70 batches that it would like to get rid of by using at a later stage on a mid-range card. In the end it comes down to the performance that the Radeon X1650 XT will bring.
