ATI Radeon X1950 XTX and CrossFire clocked equally
Written by Mavke
Thursday, 20 July 2006
For the first time, ATI plans to make CrossFire and the XTX cards clock at the same speed. Both the upcoming Radeon X1950 XTX and Radeon X1950 CrossFire edition will end up clocked at 650MHz core and 2.0GHz GDDR4 512MB memory. If everything goes well for ATI, this will be the last high end CrossFire edition card as the R600 has everything it needs to pair two cards without any necessity for a CrossFire card. The card will retail for $449 in the US and will be sold for some €409 in European retail, but will display a tendency to fall below €400.

We can now confirm that the cards will be ready for the 23rd of August but as the clock speed stays the same, don't expect any miraculous performance increase. Although the GDDR4 memory should give it quite some increased performance as the memory will end up at 2.0GHz, the R580+ core will still remain at 650MHz. This might not be sufficient to beat NVIDIA with their GeForce 7950 GX2 but could come very close. All depends on what will be possible with the R580+ core and what optimizations will have been done by ATI to crank up the performance. At least ATI is getting ready to strike back once again.
