Hi-TechReviews presents us a review on the HIS Radeon X1600 XT IceQ 256MB Turbo graphics card. When ATI first released the ATI Radeon X1600 series of video cards it was almost as if they weren't quite sure what to do with them or where they should be priced, since almost immediately after their release the price was dropped to bring them more in line with NVIDIA mid-priced video cards. HIS is proud to be ATI's 1st Tier AIB, certified and launching partner. Long term and favorable relationship with ATI, enable the HIS to work closely with ATI to promote the Excalibur graphics board; and to strive for best value on the marketing and sales of ATI product line.
HIS Radeon X1600 XT IceQ 256MB Turbo Review
If you have seen one HIS video card you have pretty much seen then all since they all use the same design heatsink and cooling fan except for the IceQ and the IceQ II, other than they are pretty much the same. The Radeon X1600 XT Turbo just like the Radeon X1600 PRO takes up two slots on your motherboards and this can either be a blessing since it offers perhaps the best cooling possible short of adding a cooling solution from Arctic Cooling or it could be a drawback as it places each card nearly on top of each other when mounted in a CrossFire motherboard as you will see later.
The Radeon X1600 XT is listed on ATI's web site as officially running at 590MHz and it accesses its memory at 1.38GHz using 128-bit clock cycle. You will notice on the inset from the box that HIS has this particular card listed as their Turbo model, which runs at 600MHz and accesses its memory at 1.4GHz. But we found out using PowerStrip that our card was running 588MHz with its memory running at 1.388MHz or almost the official specifications of ATI's regular card. The thing that makes this all the more laughable is the fact the non-Turbo card HIS offers is the exact same specifications.
The maximum overclocking we were able to achieve with the HIS Radeon X1600 XT IceQ Turbo was about 645MHz core and 1525MHz memory which is really not that bad when you consider how fast the memory is running in the first place. The current price for this card is about $149 and for that amount of money you are sure to have many hour of enjoyment playing the current games as well a large number of further titles. So if you want to have some fun and do it at a reasonable price pick one up, and remember that if you purchase a Radeon X1600 card you don't have to have a master card to run it in a CrossFire configuration.
