ASUS AX800 XT 256MB AGP Review
Written by Mavke

While checking Sharky Extreme, I noticed a review on the ASUS AX800 XT 256MB AGP graphics card. The high-end video card market is currently a very competitive one, populated by eerily similar ATI and NVIDIA products, and featuring top-end performance that would make a Radeon 9800 XT dizzy. The two main combatants are the Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition and the GeForce 6800 Ultra, and both are well equipped to deal with the performance requirements of games of today, with enough power in reserve for those of tomorrow. ATI has a dual-tiered line of Radeon X800-based products, which include the Radeon X800 PRO and Radeon X800 XT video cards.

The ASUS AX800 XT 256MB AGP definitely showed off some high-end gaming performance, and proved to be at least the equal of the GeForce 6800 Ultra. Prior to the release of 3DMark05, we gave the nod to the high-end GeForce 6800 based cards, but now that ATI has a convincing DirectX 9.0 performance benchmark to offset the NVIDIA Doom 3 advantage, it's a tougher call. At the very top of the performance scale, there is not much to choose from between the Radeon X800 XT and GeForce 6800 Ultra, with each providing advantages in certain areas. The single-slot design of the ASUS AX800 XT is a definite selling point, and ATI's ability to offer ultra high-end performance with standard cooling solutions is to be commended.

The Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition offers a compelling alternative to the GeForce 6800 Ultra, and is in tight with NVIDIA's fastest for your enthusiast dollar. Regardless of where you come down in the ATI vs.NVIDIA battle, there is no denying that ASUS has created a superior card, and the AX800 XT 256MB sits right at the top of the performance chart. The card's game speed may be cutting-edge, but the AASUS AX800 XT doesn't stop there, and also provides VIVO multimedia capabilities, and a killer retail bundle. At least until the All-In-Wonder X800 versions are released, this is about as good as it gets on the ATI side.
