PCStats presents a review on the ASUS Extreme N7900 GT TOP 256MB PCIe video card.. Assembling a wicked gaming machine can be a challenging task, but realistically the most important device is the video card, so focus your efforts there. Other parts like the processor, memory and motherboard must be up to snuff as well, but definitely get the fastest video card you can and skimp elsewhere! After all, there's nothing more frustrating than a PC choking when it matters most. Well, perhaps trying to explain what happened to squad mates or fellow clan members is worse but you get the idea... While it's true that a fast gaming computer will not make you a better gamer, it can give you a definitive edge when playing against others.
ASUS Extreme N7900 GT TOP 256MB PCI-E Review
There is no such thing as the perfect video card GPU, but NVIDIA has definitely made a
strong case for the GeForce 7900 GT. It's not the fastest video card core on the
market but it's definitely near the top. Factor in an aggressive price point and
manufacturers bundling in loads of goodies and you've got yourself a pretty
great deal on hand. Bottom of the barrel GeForce 7900 GT's go for $300, but for
just a little more you can get yourself a PCI Express video card like
the Extreme N7900 GT TOP. With a retail price of $320, the Extreme N7900 GT
TOP is faster than a GeForce 7900 GT thanks to factory
pre-overclocking.
The ASUS Extreme N7900 GT TOP PCI Express video card comes with a
lot of goodies, the biggest being a full copy of the game King Kong. The video
card itself looks like a plain jane GeForce 7900 GT aside from the custom ASUS cooler. GeForce 7900 GT video
cards are a bit smaller than other high end cards, which is nice for a change.
Despite the 90nm GPU die shrink video cards like the Asus Extreme N7900 GT TOP use up
more power than the previous generation, so make sure your power supply is
sufficient. If you're sure about yours, you can check with NVIDIA's SLI recommended power
supplies list.
The performance of the ASUS Extreme N7900 GT TOP is simply awesome and offers value that hasn't been seen for a while. It outperforms the older GeForce 7800 GT/GTX and sometimes by quite a margin too. As for the ATI side, it can only be bested by ATI's latest and greatest the Radeon X1900 XTX. As mentioned earlier, the Extreme N7900 GT TOP video card comes factory overclocked with core speeds running at 520MHz, memory 1.44GHz. That's a very healthy increase from stock GeForce 7900 GT speeds of 400MHz core, 1.3GHz
memory wouldn't you say?
In our overclocking tests we were able to push the video card to 561MHz core, 1.51GHz memory. At this speed the Extreme N7900 GT TOP was approaching GeForce 7900 GTX performance territory! The ASUS Extreme N7900 GT TOP is an awesome video card and if you're looking for serious frame rates in any game, definitely check it out. One thing is for sure, this bad boy is fast enough for anything in the foreseeable future.
