nV News comes with a review on the NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GTX 512MB PCIe graphics card. Back in March NVIDIA announced three new Graphics Processing Units (GPU's), the GeForce 7900 GTX, GT, and GeForce 7600 GT. The GeForce 7900 GTX became NVIDIA's flagship GPU by replacing the GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB. A much higher clocked 512MB version of the GeForce 7800 GTX offered a quite an increase in performance over the 256MB model and competed against ATI's Radeon X1900 XTX. The GeForce 7900 GTX is manufactured using a 90nm fabrication process. The die shrink from the 110nm GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB made it necessary to redesign circuitry. During the redesign, NVIDIA's engineers implemented optimizations that allowed the GPU to be produced more efficiently.
NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GTX 512MB PCI-E Review
The GeForce 7900 GTX was another hard launch by NVIDIA, meaning that graphics
cards were available to purchase on the day of the launch. The GeForce 7800 GTX
512MB was also a hard launch, for a few hours at least, but demand quickly
exceeded supply, availability became scarce, and the price skyrocketed. The
availability of the GeForce 7900 GTX was much better as I picked up an EVGA GeForce 7900 GTX and XFX GeForce 7900 GTX from two
different on-line retailers during the week of the launch. Once you're sold on
SLI technology, you'll probably continue to use SLI with future
GPU's.
When you consider the plight of the GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB, the
GeForce 7900 GTX turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Six months ago, demand
for the GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB was extremely high. The GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB
debuted on November 14th of last year and by the end of the day, graphics cards
were commanding a price of $749 and higher. Even at those exorbitant prices, an
upper echelon of hardcore gamers chose to invest in one, and sometimes, two
graphics cards. Fortunately, the GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB has held its value as it
remains a close competitor to the GeForce 7900 GTX.
