ATI's lower clocked R580 chips a high grade
Written by Mavke

A stray whisper has it that ATI wants to reserve its Radeon X1900 GTO brand for its next generation mainstream product based on the RV570/RV560 core. At the same time, the company has decided to release an R580 based Radeon X1900 GT card and we expect to see it in early May, probably the second week of that month. Sources close to company suggest that ATI doesn't have a shortage of R580 production, but it claims it doesn't have enough fall-out chips, meaning those unable to reach the top frequency and have under-powered pipes inside. This is how you usually make the slower variations, as not all the chips will work at the desired 650MHz frequency.

In ATI's case, most of its R580 chips will work at either 650MHz and assume the guise of an XTX card, or will work at 625MHz and become a Radeon X1900 XT card. ATI simply does not have enough screwed-up chips that can work at 500MHz to make a massive quantity of Radeon X1900 GT cards, but there will be quite a few of them. This card is set to take the Radeon X1800 XL's place. At least, this is one of the possible scenarios. Another is that one should never trust the whispering grass. Only time will tell what will come of the Radeon X1900 GT board.
