Maximum Overclocking...

On top of all we did some extra effort and tried to overclock these OCZ Technology memory modules a bit more which ended up at a maximum of 260MHz FSB. The only doubt I have here if it is actually the memory or the Intel processor that is blocking us from going further. I guess some better cooling might have shed some light on this. Somehow by applying a voltage increase to 1.535V on the CPU we have been able to reach 3.9GHz with our trusted Intel P4 Prescott 3.0GHz. No to bad with just air cooling I would say...

As I wanted to push it a bit further, I used a mobile airco system to blow cold air towards the CPU cooler and by that reducing the heat even more. Of course this wouldn't be something for every day use, but doing so I could increase the voltage a tiny bit more to 1.550V and was able to reach for the first time 4.0GHz out of my Intel P4 Prescott. Doing so I was able to overclock the processor by 1000MHz extra, against the default speed of 3.0GHz. The memory is now running at 266MHz (532MHz DDR), and was just workable.

As I somehow felt there was a tiny bit more to get out of the system, I even tried to go a bit higher with my overclocking attempt. I finally reached 4035MHz as a maximum overclock for the CPU as after that the system started rebooting randomly. We could only run some minor benchmarks, as the system showed some stability issues. So the CPU just couldn't take it anymore, which is most likely the case or we have found the maximum memory overclocking of 269MHz (538MHz DDR). I got the feeling the Intel P4 Prescott is holding us back, while the memory could have handled some higher bus speeds.

Final Thoughts

The OCZ EB PC-4000 Platinum Edition dual channel kit is a real screamer and with today's system requirements, it is ever increasing knowledge that in order to stay on the cutting edge of performance, extra ram capacity is a necessity. As 2048MB has become a new standard to most gaming enthusiasts on the prowl for more performance and smoother game play, OCZ Technology has filled those needs and more. Anyone can seriously benefit from larger ram capacities thanks to OCZ and other manufacturers who are stream-lining large capacity ram kits.

All in all, the Platinum Edition dual channel 2GB memory is one of the best 2GB dual channel kits of its class. The OCZ EB PC-4000 Platinum Edition dual channel memory kit lives up to its specifications, and in fact surpasses them. You can definitely get a noticeable boost in performance compared to running generic memory at SPD timings, and it also pleasantly surprised us by being able to run at 266MHz (DDR532) with more aggressive timings. The fact that it can maintain tight timings and high speeds with just 2.7V is all the more impressive.

Gone are the days when the best performance is provided by 1GB kits of memory. OCZ has given us an alternative that provides amazing performance, solid overclockability, and 2GB's of memory in the form of two 1GB modules running in dual channel at timings that are un-heard of anywhere else on the market. If you haven't yet moved up to 2GB's of memory, consider this product for any system, its fast, stable and pushes the boundaries of what is possible with two 1GB sticks of memory. And with the Enhanced Bandwidth (EB) technology OCZ has scored a home run.

With outstanding performance and stability, combined with excellent overclocking head room, this ram is without a doubt the fastest sticks of DDR stuffed in our system, period. To sum it all up, OCZ Technology has hit the mark with the Platinum Edition memory, providing high quality, high performance, visually appealing memory, and backing it up with OCZ's reputation for taking care of their customers. These modules should not be overlooked by anyone in the market for DDR memory and stunning performance!
