ASUS Extreme AX1300 PRO Silent 256MB Review
Written by Mavke

Xtreme Computing reveals a review on the ASUS Extreme AX1300 PRO Silent 256MB graphics card. Although at the bottom of the scale the ASUS Extreme AX1300 PRO promises to be ideal for MCE PC's or for those under a budget, but the question is with games becoming more demanding will it be up to scratch. The Extreme AX1300 PRO Silent is equipped with exclusive ASUS innovative ReverseCool Technology, offering GPU-on-the-back technology with fanless design on both sides of this card to deliver high-performance cooling at 0dB. Manufactured through 90nm technology and incorporated a new performance architecture, and graphics engine enhanced Shader Model 3.0 and delivered fast memory speeds and Dynamic Range Rendering.

The main selling point of this graphics card it the fact it is passively cooled and therefore totally silent. To achieve the best cooling results with this in mind ASUS have, literally, flipped the graphics card upside down, so to speak. The business side is on the opposite side of the card than normal to allow natural heat convection to be able to cool the card as efficiently as possible. To be honest I don't understand why normal graphics cards aren't this way round. This certainly adds up in the cooling ability of the Extreme AX1300 PRO Silent.

I think it safe to say this is not a graphics card that is aimed purely at gamers, even though it comes with nice King Kong game. I would say this card is more for your occasional gamer who has a virtually silent, possibly, multimedia PC. With that in mind this is an excellent card and does the job perfectly and can even play some taxing games at reasonable detail and resolution. So if you have just upgraded to PCI Express and can't quite afford that GeForce 7800 then this card would be an ideal cheap temporary solution.

There is one thing I would have liked to see included though, a temperature sensor on the core. It being a passively cooled card this would have been very useful in my opinion. Despite this I recommend this card for a budget option.
