The Inquirer learned that
ATI's next-generation RV516 chip
is going to be built using UMC's 90 nanometre fabrication process. ATI is doing an interesting process
transition, as it first wants to move the mid-range segment to an 80 nanometre
process before later following with its high-end and entry-level chips. ATI doesn't need another chip fiasco
as it had enough troubles getting the 90 nanometre process right. We learned
that UMC is embracing graphics chip companies and offering favourable deals to
produce their chips at its fabs. Certainly the fab has done enough to woo ATI away from rival fab TSMC. Only
the future will tell if this move is a good one.

The RV516 chip is meant to take replace the RV515 based Radeon X1300 in the
low-end market and to compete The GeForce 6200 and GeForce 7300 generation of
cards. It features four pixel pipelines and stays at 90 nanometre. We don't
expect any major changes from the RV515. The RV516 will be pretty much the same
chip as before, just manufactured at UMC not at TSMC like its RV515 brother. The
RV516 should sample in April while we can expect the production chips at June.
It will feature Avivo support, CrossFire, HDMI and will sport a PCI Express
interface.
