MSI Radeon X1600 PRO 256MB PCI-E Review
Written by Mavke
Thursday, 06 April 2006
Virtual-Hideout brings us a review on the MSI Radeon X1600 PRO 256MB PCIe graphics card. The Radeon X1600 series is designed to deliver outstanding digital entertainment and 3D graphics through its unique ultra-threaded architecture and Avivo video and display technology. The Radeon X1600 is CrossFire Ready to deliver the ultimate gaming performance. The Radeon X1600 series transform your PC with astonishing graphics performance and visual quality, creating a lifelike High Definition (HD) viewing experience with 3D games, DVD movies, and digital photography and video. The Radeon X1600 series of graphics cards is a mid-range card from the Radeon X1K series.

The Radeon X1600 video card comes in two flavors: the XT and the Pro. The Radeon X1600 XT runs at 590MHz core speed, while the PRO runs at 500MHz. Another key feature is the Avivo decoding technology which has H.264 support, a codec that will play a role in watching HD video on your PC. The memory used on the MSI unit are Infineon 2.5ns chips. he eight RAM chips, four on each side of the PCB, are rated for an 800MHz operating frequency and have a combined capacity of 256MB. The RAM chips located on the back side of the card are not cooled.

For a video card that won't break the bank, this one should fill the needs of most users out there. All the demos I played ran excellently. Colin McRae Rally 2005 was bundled with the card and it ran flawlessly, along with a few other games I tried. ATI is pushing the Radeon X1000 series of cards for its shader capability, which is great, but doesn't mention much about other kind of games. As newer games are developed, the makers are saying that they will be more shader dependent. Of course, that would lead us to believe that the Radeon X1K series of cards are the way to go.
