The shortage of high-end parts from both nVidia and ATI has not been uncommon knowledge over the last 3 months. The ATI Radeon X800XT Phantom Edition seems to have shipped primarily to journalists, whilst the nVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra-Rare seems similarly placed in the market.
ATI: The chips are down
We have heard some interesting information over the last couple of days, however. The first is a report at Digitimes that suggests that ATI's supply issues are now trickling down to the mainstream parts too, leading to shortages across the rocky Canadian graphics card range. Sources close to ATI suggested to us that the problem was that ATI was using just one fab to manufacture its components, and that this led to a bottleneck.
In contrast, key nVidia partners Gainward and XFX are thought to be expecting major shipments of Ultra parts this week, fulfilling all their backorders - and allegedly backorders for the ATI part in addition.
We've heard nVidia try to spin to us that it has had no supply problems over the last three months, so we'll be keeping an eye on the situation. |
