VIA starts sampling DualGFX PCIe chips
Written by Mavke

Chip firm VIA has started sampling the PT894 Pro, a Pentium 4 chipset that supports DDR2-667 dual channel memory, and which includes DualGFX Express - a twin PCIe implementation.

It has also started sampling the PT894, which is the same thing but without the DualGFX bells and whistles. The bus speeds supports 533MHz, 800MHz and the 1066MHz implementation, with the DualGFX roll aimed at the enthusiast PC market.

Both these chipsets are likely to be released pretty quickly, during this fourth quarter.

On the AMD front, VIA will go into mass production with dual PCI Express K8T890 in just a few weeks. This too has support for DualGFX, while the K8T890 is also slated for the same launch period.

It doesn't take a genius to figure out why VIA is so fast off the mark with DDR2-667. Those with long memories will recall that it was largely through VIA's push to DDR, that Intel was eventually to leave Rambus languishing at the altar.
