GigaPod Operational

Well, I just wanted to share some final images on the operation of the Spire GigaPod III enclosure. When you plug-in the GigaPod III SP110-NEB it will get recognised immediatly and the USB drive wil become available. When the USB drive is not accessed the light on the enclosure will be red. When you access it, when copying some files it will start flashing blue...

So as you can see from the above, the Spire GigaPod III reveals what is happening or not happening by the integrated LED that will turn blue or red depending on the operation of the harddrive.

Final Thoughts

The Spire GigaPod III SP110-NEB enclosure is what we call a top-notch product. The aluminum case is stylish, solid and firm. When it comes to the installation, we can only encourage Spire for the user friendly and ease of use. The two screws design does all that, the simple method of using side brackets that guide the hard disk is all it takes. Well done Spire! And what about software or drivers? None are needed... Unless you are still using Windows 95/98. But in that case you use the CD-Rom with all drivers that come with the GigaPod III package.

There is only one thing you have to take into account when going for a USB hard drive solution and that is the speed or performance. The performance is limited, not by the hard drive itself but by the USB interface. So going for the fastest hard disk will not make any difference then to opt for a lower model. To wrap it up, the performance of the GigaPod III enclosure was excellent. Spire also has the GigaPod III SP110-NEB available with FireWire or SATA interface which will certainly improve the throughput over the USB connection. But the important features of a external drive is mobility and reliability. And that is what you get from Spire!
