Hiper Type-R HPU-4B580 580W Power Supply

Up Close & Personal (Cont.)

And what about the unique design of Hiper on their modular cables? The end of the wiring which is inserted into the PSU consists of a hard black plastic, a metal collar, and some other metal hardware. This piece is very well built and has a connection which feels much better than other modular PSU's. Screwing the collar down really holds it in place, more so that a plastic clip.

Hiper has made in total 3 different types of these kindy coaxial/BNC cable connections. This is done to clearly indicate the difference between each of these cables.

  • 2-pin Connector: Intel P4 power connector (4-pin)
  • 3-pin Connector: PCI Express power connector (6-pin)
  • 4-pin Connector: Molex power connector (4-pin)

Installation Procedure

Now that we know all about the Hiper Type-R HPU-4B580 power supply it is time to put this beast to work. We will be using one of our MVKTech systems to install the power supply and to run some power hungry tests on it. Our MVKTech rig is packed with several hard drives, memory modules to draw as much power from the power supply as much as possible.

  • ASUS P4P800 Deluxe Mainboard
  • Intel Pentium 4 (Prescott) 3.0GHz CPU
  • 1024MB OCZ PC-3700 Gold Dual Channel Memory
  • 1024MB Corsair XMS PRO PC-3200 XL TWINX Memory
  • PNY Verto 6800 GT (NV40) 256MB AGP
  • 1x Maxtor Diamond Max 9 200GBIDE HDD (UDMA133)
  • 2x Maxtor Diamond Max 9 120GB SATA HDD (Raid Config)
  • 2x Maxtor Diamond Max 9 250GB SATA HDD (Raid Config)
  • Plextor PX-130A DVD-ROM Drive
  • Plextor PX-716A DVD+/-RW DL Drive
  • Hiper Type-R HPU-4B580 (580W) Power Supply
  • Cooler Master Cooldrive 6
  • Cooler Master ATC-200C Case
  • Sharkoon Silent Eagle 2000

We will just need to install the Type-R 580W power supply into our Cooler Master case and then we are set to go. So let's get that done first and then we can finally check how powerful this Hiper PSU is.

First of all I removed the old power supply, an Ultra X-Connect 500W, so that we can replace it with the more powerful Hiper Type-R 580W. We will install the PSU in the therefore assigned spot of the Cooler Master case, which is at the top of the case. This way the PSU will not add up on the heat already produced by the other hardware.

By sliding the Hiper Type-R 580W into the assigned bay of our Cooler Master case we have the PSU installed in no time. We just need to make sure the main power cable was taken into account when sliding the PSU and top guide it through the case. The main power cable is well protected by the blue UV sensitive braiding.
