Graphics giant nVidia has
announced its GeForce 6200 graphics card, which has Shader Model 3.0 features,
and features a clock speed of 300MHz core and 550MHz memory. The card has 4
pipelines and uses DDR1 memory, but does not have support for
SLI.
nVidia announces GeForce 6200, angers Euro-Hacks
The real story, however, is the utterly shambolic launch that nVidia has stumbled into. nVidia's chaps in America were quite happy to send out boards to top sites like HardOCP, who have a 12 page review of the card online. European press, however, appear to have been put in an outrageously difficult position by the green-machine this side of the Atlantic, who didn't even inform press of the announcement until a couple of days (or, in some cases, a couple of hours) before the announcement was due to be made. There were no boards distributed, so no benchmarking done. In short, the launch has been an utter non-event for anyone outside of the US.
Of course, messing around the biggest hardware enthusiast site in the world is not a particularly good marketing plan, and the guys at Tom's Hardware Guide, who are based in Europe, have written up an interesting editorial on the whole situation. Bemoaning the state of almost every recent graphics release from both ATI and nVidia, the Toms bods are declaring that this simply isn't the way it's meant to be reviewed. In bold bullet points, they state that it is a disservice to their readers to rush testing just because a vendor wants a big PR launch and to review products that won't appear for weeks or months afterwards on the shelves for people to actually buy.
They're not the only ones. Talking to numerous members of the European hardware press, there is an awful lot of anger and annoyance at the way nVidia have seemingly ostracised them from the launch and have simply denied their readers any coverage of the product by not organising themselves to get information to people in time, let alone boards.
We wait eagerly to see what the next move from nVidia and ATIore will be. Will the Toms stance actually make a difference to how these products are launched? |
