Right away I can feel the density of the Ulti-mat, which uses 1.25mm metal plate construction. The 12 x 10 inch package has some weight to it. I definitely want to see whats inside now. Clicking the above images will give you higher resolution shots of the front and back of the retail package, let's see what's inside...

Opening the box reveals one the most technologically advanced mouse pads on the market. On top of the Ulti-mat you can see the included mouse skates. The mouse skates are included to ensure you get the best surface performance from your existing mouse. The skates, you guessed, are made of Teflon. If your mouse already has Teflon skates, then you do not necessarily need to use these, but they are included for the ultimate performance and those who have warn out or less than desirable mouse pads. Let's take a close look at the Ulti-mat.

The top of the mouse pad is manufactured of a Teflon coated metal plate, while the under side is padded with foamed plastic that prevents pad movement and any echoing sounds. The plastic foam padding is glued to the bottom surface and is not removable, so don’t try to take it off. The 1.25mm thick steel plate is sturdy and very rigid.

The surface of the Ulti-mat is impregnated with speckles that look like very fine glitter. If you have ever seen a early 80's Teflon coated skillet, then you can pretty much get the idea. If not, well the Teflon coating used here is the same technology used on your mothers frying pan, ya' know, the non stick surface? Get the idea? OK we will spell it out for you, it's DuPont's "Silverstone" Triple-Coated Teflon® coating.

Having been said lets not fry any eggs on it just yet. As with your cookware, one should not allow anything metal to come into contact with the Silverstone coating, such as car keys or tools. Doing so will damage the surface and could cause the surface to chip.
