id Software releases Doom 3 for Linux
Written by Mavke

Game maker id Software today released the binaries to enable a Linux install of its top shooter, Doom 3.

Imageid Software releases Doom 3 for Linux

The installation isn't exactly a piece of cake. Users are asked to manually copy over the archive .pk4 files from the Windows CD (geekily, the correct checksums for these are also given) and grab the client from the id Software FTP server.

Interestingly, the system requirements for the Linux version are lower than the Windows version. Whereas Windows requires a 1.5GHz Pentium 4 and 384MB of RAM, the Linux version, according to id Software, will quite happily trundle along on a 1GHz Pentium 3 and 256MB of RAM.

Perhaps a kicker is that ATI cards don't appear to work fully in-game. The FAQ states that ATI developers are working on a new driver release to fully support the game.

Linux users will be able to game on Win32 servers, provided server admins patch their machines with the Linux files, and the 1.1 Windows patch that was released last week is compatible with the Linux release.
