It is not often you will see me break local news not on the subject of AMD or another tech company, but this one hit close to home. This morning a gunman fired off a round inside a Barton Creek Mall movie theatre. For those with some idea of where AMD is in Austin you would be talking about maybe 10 minutes North up Mopac from their new headquarters. The gunman shot into the air after he stumbled up in front of the screen. At a morning show with school back in there probably were not a lot of people in that theatre. Police were dispatched, but could not find the gunman. Local news sites picked up on this about two hours ago.
I have heard that a man on North Lamar near Central Market that was walking erratically down the side walk, and had fired off his weapon between 9:30PM and 10PM. It appears this gunman was apprehended in EZ's restaurant across the street from Central Market. I have frequented EZ's many times as it is not far from Tek Republik as you can see from this map, or from my home. In fact I had been at Central Market across the street at 9:15PM buying groceries roughly 30 minutes before the incident. It is somewhat alaming that someone was roaming armed around the city as this type of thing is certainly not common in Austin.
From the description I heard about this man appears to match the gunman from earlier in the day. Lets hope this is that man, and he is now off the streets. |

Intel has decided to side with the Russians this time around and have even gotten them a tank. Cybertank is what it is known as. I have no idea what it is for, but it looks pretty awesome. It even comes with a girl. AMD should do something similar, only for Georgia. I know a few people in Atlanta who would like AMD to do this as well. Thanks to AzmountAryl for the heads up. |

Digit Life has reviewed the Gigabyte MA78GPM-DS2H. It is based on AMD's 780G chipset. You can pick one up here. Success of the MA78GM-S2H universal microATX motherboard apparently inspired Gigabyte engineers to a more daring experiment, a more feature-rich motherboard. While the video buffer does not increase the prime cost much, the voltage regulator does. Nevertheless, we are sure that users will be interested in this original motherboard. |

Texas has passed a new computer recycling law. There are a lot of companies on the list, and it should be interesting to see what it leads to. In this program, computer equipment comprises desktop and laptop computers, monitors (display devices without a tuner), and the accompanying keyboard and mouse made by the same manufacturer. |

Fudo discusses mid and high end graphics solutions. AMD wins this time around. You can check out video card prices here. The red team also has an ace up its sleeve, the HD4850 X2. Equipped with cheaper DDR3 memory, this card should retail at around €270, maybe even less by the time it appears on the market. It should be faster than the current 65nm GTX260 and we're expecting it in late September. However, AIBs don't seem to be in a rush, as they're doing fine as it is. Basically, at the moment the only trouble for ATI is that it has nothing in between its €200 HD4870 and the €400 HD4870 X2. The HD4850 X2 should fill this gap perfectly. |

The Austin American Statesman reports that AMD spinoff Spansion is looking for a buyer for Fab 25. Fab 25 used to churn out CPUs for AMD, and memory back before AMD spun them off in an attempt to ditch the commodity memory business. Spansion already has sold two of its three Japanese plants, Berenbaum wrote, "and our checks suggest its Austin fab is up for sale, but that a buyer hasn't been found" A Spansion spokeswoman said that the Austin factory remains a key part of the company's flash memory production system. The company expects to continue using the facility for the foreseeable future, she said.
But the company announced in July that it was looking for "strategic alliances to transfer certain assets to third parties and establish manufacturing and technology partnerships." |

"Trusted Reviews" has reviewed the Biostar TA790GX A2+. You can grab it here at Tiger Direct for $99.99. This week it’s the turn of Biostar with the TA790GX A2+ which is handy as it gives us the chance to clear up a couple of unresolved issues that we had with the A7DA-S. The first concern is the high SRP of £114 that Foxconn gave us for the A7DA-S. As we said in the review, we hoped that the price would drop to £70-£75 but Scan currently has this model listed at £108 so it looks like our hopes have been dashed. By contrast the Biostar is on sale at Envizage for a few pence over £60. Now that’s more like it. |

Barron's reports that Merrill Lynch has cut AMD to underperform. As for AMD, Pajjuri says the change followed a review of his ratings following the call on ADI. “Although we have not changed our fundamental outlook for AMD, we believe it is relatively less attractive than other Neutral rated stocks in its cluster,” he writes. “AMD has outperformed its peers in recent weeks due to attractive valuation, sale of the digital TV business, and the optimism about the potential announcement of its long awaited asset-lite model.” |
