SteelSeries S&S gaming mousepad

Today we are going to spend a little time talking about something most everyone owns, mousepads. No they aren't something those little 4 legged furry buckteeth critters living in your walls would call home, we are talking about the thing on your desk that you use your PC mouse on. The good people at SteelSeries has sent us their SteelSeries S&S gaming surface mousepad for testing. Will it give your mouse a place to call home or is it just something else to put on your desk that you don't need? Hang around your pad to get the scoop on the pad.

The SteelSound 3H headset is SteelSeries's budget line headset and is designed with the gamer in mind, be it professional or casual gamer. Will the SteelSound 3H headset hold up under some unusual stress that a gamer puts their equipment through? Follow along and lets see if SteelSeries done a bang-up job or just bombed out.

Driver Signature Enforcement Overrider 1.1 @ NGOHQ.com

"Microsoft did well releasing Service Pack 1, but somehow they forgot end users when they introduced a very restricted module of driver signature enforcement. In laymen’s terms, all drivers and system files must be digitally verified or they cannot run when using both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Vista. In the past, it was possible to turn that feature off; but due to new kernel security updates, it is impossible to turn it off without degrading security and stability of your operating system or putting your master boot records in risk by using other software alternatives. Pressing F8 every time on boot up can be a serious pain in the ass and frustrating to those that miss the time window available to press F8 during start up. Others have found workarounds, but most of them are too risky and may trash your master boot records and some others were too complicated for the average end user to perform, at least until now - thanks to our latest tool."

Palit Revolution 700 Deluxe Radeon HD 4870 X2 2GB Video Card Review @ ThinkComputers.org

“Our friends at Palit, who usually aren't happy with the reference design of video cards anyway, have come up with a new version of the HD 4870 X2, with two fans blowing on a pair of heatpipe coolers to cool off those cookin' GPUs. Taking up three expansion slots, this may be the largest gaming video card ever built. Billed by Palit as "the first custom designed HD 4870 X2", the card not only sports custom cooling, but also a Palit-designed PCB, and four different output interfaces. In addition, they have overclocked the 2 gigs of GDDR5 memory. Read on as we check out the Palit Revolution 700 Deluxe!"

Antec Veris Fusion Remote Max Premium Home Theater PC Case Review @ Tweaknews.net

"The Antec Fusion Remote Max is a great HTPC case. It keeps the installed system cool, is all but silent and has an outstanding software package. The fit and finish is very good, and the contrasts on the front panel treatment give the Max a look that is both distinctive and pleasing."

Stock to Clocked – Core i7 920 at 3.8GHz @ TweakTown

"When a new processor makes its way into my testbed, I like to take the time to see what kind of performance increase the overclock we use day in and day out gives us when compared to its stock speed. Being the optimist I am, I thought I would go straight to 4.2GHz (hey, it’s worth a try) and while it got into Windows without too much drama, firing up prime found us quickly greeted with a BSOD. Dropping to 4GHz increased stability, but since the system must be 100% stable, a further drop to 3.8GHz was the perfect point."

SilverStone Fortress FT01 @ Phoronix

"For the past sixteen months it's been difficult for us to find an ATX computer enclosure that beats the SilverStone Temjin TJ10 in terms of its build quality, design, and functionality, but SilverStone may have finally set a new precedent for desktop enclosures with the introduction of the Fortress FT01. This ATX chassis consists of a uni-body frame with origins that can be traced back to the Temjin TJ07, but with better cooling performance, dual 180mm fans, and a number of new features. It's with great pride that today we review the SilverStone Fortress FT01."

HTC AT&T FUZE Reviewed @ TestFreaks.com

"Today I've got the HTC Fuze for review, it's the new Windows Mobile based phone from AT&T, this phone goes by a few names and there are quite a few variations of it floating around the cellular networks right now. I'm sure by this point most of you know this phone, it's been hyped for quite a while, but is it worth the hype? Is it really all that? "

Silent Computer Article @ Rbmods

These days everyone wants a quiet computer, it doesnt matter if its a stationary, laptop or HTPC they are all supposed to perform at all times with the smallest amount cooling possible. That equation does not really go together that well, todays computer parts put out a amazing amount of heat so there will be noise until we figure out another way to keep the parts cool.

Sennheiser HD 595 Headphones @ TheTechLounge

"I've been covering in-ear monitors lately, but it's time to change pace for a set of full-fledged, open, over-the-ear cans. This time around I'll be jamming with Sennheiser's HD 595, which sits in the middle of their audiophile headphone line. Ah, the classic scene of powering on your Hi-Fi system in the living room, dimming the lights, tossing on a pair of huge headphones, and settling into your favorite easy chair with a glass of Glenlivet 25, neat. My modern equivalent involves my iMac, a desk chair, and a Lone Star tall boy. Not quite as classy, but the phones I'm sporting spruce the picture up a bit."

Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 Toxic Revew @ [OC]ModShop

The PC gaming industry has seen many graphics chips come and go. Companies like 3dfx, S3, Trident, Intel, nVidia, ATI and others have tapped into the gaming industry and have produced 3d accellerators for the PC, and most of them have gone. There are only two major players in the PC graphics industry: nVidia and ATI. These two graphics juggernauts unveil new products every year, which effectively doubles the effective processing power over the previous generation. This ruthless competition is both good and bad news for consumers: Good in that faster technology becomes cheaper, and we have many options. Bad in that the expensive video card you just purchased will remain bleeding edge for only a few months. The latest battle comes just in time for the 2008 holiday season. ATI's 4800 series goes up against nVidia's GTX line of cards. Sapphire is one of the more well-known manufacturers of ATI-based video cards, and they have a secret weapon in the world of single-GPU video cards. Their 4870 Toxic video card not only comes pre-overclocked, but is stacked with 512MB of the fastest GDDR5 memory, which is certainly enough for today's gamer.

Sapphire Radeon HD4830 512MB Graphics Card Review @ Bigbruin.com

I am not exactly sure how I expected the Sapphire Radeon HD4830 512MB graphics card to fare during testing, but it wound up looking more like an enthusiast grade card than an entry level offering. It should be able to handle just about any game without having to sacrifice too much in terms of frame rates or settings, making it a great option for the gamer on a budget.

Samsung CLP-315W Network Colour Laser Printer @ DreamWare Computers

"If you're shopping for a laser printer you can usually expect to pay more than you would for an inkjet printer, but it will pay itself back over time with much lower printing costs. Start shopping around for a colour laser printer and you will suddenly see a huge price hike compared to their monochrome counterparts. Since a single toner cartridge itself can run between $30 and $100+, you can imagine the extra costs in making a printer that uses four of them. With colour laser printers having been in the market for long enough now, we're starting to see manufacturers take a step towards playing with their design a bit more. Trying to entice people to spend a little extra and go for a colour laser instead of that old monochrome laser which doesn't print nice pictures. I happen to have the Samsung CLP-315W sitting here today, a colour laser printer promising a smaller size than most and a lower price than most while still managing to integrate wired and wireless networking capabilities."

Patriot Xporter Magnum 64GB Pen Drive – When Size Matters @ TweakTown

"It was not that long ago that we all got excited about 2GB and 4GB pen drives, but as flash memory continued to develop and become cheaper, we continually saw improvements in the amount of storage space we see in portable devices. Only a short while ago the usual suspects started releasing 32GB pen drives, but that portable storage milestone was short-lived – and has since been smashed. Patriot Memory continues to push the boundaries by releasing one of the first high-performance 64GB pen drives to the market, just in time to be a stocking filler or ideal geeky gift for Christmas this year."

Lian-Li PC-60FW Case Review @ Virtual-Hideout

“The PC-60FW turns out to be another winner from Lian-Li. The level of quality, professionalism and attention-to-detail has been properly carried over from previous models to this one, and it shows in many places, from the nicely-installed window to the improved HDD cage. Additionally, the relocation of the PSU to the bottom of the case helps improve the layout by making it cleaner and less prone to airflow blockage from messy cables.”

Xilence RAM Cooler HP Duo Dual Heatpipe Passive Memory Cooler Review @ ThinkComputers.org

“Our friends at bgears have given us that option with the Xilence RAM Cooler HP Duo memory cooler. Xilence is a separate company that builds cases, power supplies, CPU coolers, and other cooling products; all with silence in mind, but their products are marketed in the US by bgears. The RAM Cooler HP Duo has a pair of copper heatpipes with lots of pretty copper fins, so besides providing extra cooling for those hot memory chips, you also get an excuse to add more shiny copper to the inside of your rig. Read on as I look at the HP Duo!"

Sapphire HD 4830 512MB @ OCC

"I very much like the dual slot cooler because I personally had issues with early HD 4850 card overheating and this card stayed cool and quiet even when overclocked to speeds higher than the stock HD 4850 cards. Sapphire was smart about the heating issues on the HD 4850 with their dual slot cooling solution and I am very pleased to see they brought it to their HD 4830 line as well to aid in cooling. Out of the HD 4830 cards I tested this one stayed the coolest even to the touch. My HD 4850 has to sit in my case for a few minutes before I even dare to remove it because I have burned my fingers on it before. Sapphire did a great job in designing and building the HD 4830 for us."

Palit Revolution 700 Deluxe HD 4870 X2 2GB Graphics Card @ TweakTown

"The latest company to attack a HD 4800 series card is Palit and the particular model is the top dog from the ATI range, the HD 4870 X2. From there we will strap the card into our brand spanking new X58 test bed to see exactly what it’s capable of. We’re expecting big numbers from this beast."

Real World Benchmarks Of The EXT4 File-System @ Phoronix

"With the EXT4 file-system being marked as stable in the forthcoming Linux 2.6.28 kernel, and some Linux distributions potentially switching to it as an interim step until the btrfs file-system is ready, we decided it was time to benchmark this journaled file-system for ourselves. We ran a number of disk-centric Linux benchmarks along with several of our real-world tests from the Phoronix Test Suite to gauge how well the EXT4 file-system performance will be noticed by desktop users and computer gamers. We have compared these EXT4 results to the EXT3, XFS, and ReiserFS file-systems."

AXP Supernova 1000w and 800w Review @ XSReviews

Core i7 920 Core Disabling Performance Analysis @ TweakTown

"So, while I was there pondering around with the options, I wondered what would happen if we started disabling cores. How would that affect 3D performance? What I really wanted to know is how many cores we really need; one, two, three or four? – Sure, there have been articles that compare a dual core based Core 2 processor to a quad core one, but what happens if the only difference between every CPU configuration is the amount of cores while FSB, speed and memory settings are all the same? With that in mind, cores started dropping quicker than flies on a 40c day in Australia and the benchmarks came a’flowing. I can tell you right now, the results were very interesting. So without further ado, let’s get straight into the benchmarks to find out how many cores we really need for today’s games."

ICYDOCK EZ-DOCK 2.5"/3.5" SATA to eSATA & USB HDD Docking Station Enclosure for Mac & PC @ TestFreaks.com

"Today for review I've got a rather cool product from IcyDock that is sort of a hard drive enclosure but not really, it's called the EZ-Dock and as it's name implies it's more of a dock than an enclosure. The Ez-Dock allows you to use either 2.5" or 3.5" SATA hard drives with it in a small docking station that is removable from the base so you can take it with you if need be. It is though, and enclosure of sorts in that it comes with a carrying case so you can dock a 2.5" drive, put it in the carrying case and take it with you. "

ZOTAC NITRO – Graphics Card Overclocking Made Easy @ TweakTown

"Overclocking a graphics card isn’t really a hard task. With programs like Rivatuner you can find yourself overclocking your core and memory within minutes of setting up your graphics card. For this reason, it does make us wonder why ZOTAC would take the time and effort to release a device that lets you do it without having to use software. Really, there was only one way to find out; get one and take it for a spin to see exactly what we have going on here. What we’ll do is have a look at the package and then take a closer look at how the device works. Once we’ve done that we will overclock our GTX 280 to see what we can achieve and run it through some benchmarks."

PowerColor HD 4830 @ OCC

"Wow was I surprised when I got to overclocking this baby. She took everything I threw at her and begged for more. Using the Catalyst Control Center I was able to increase the core speed from 575MHz to a whopping 670MHz almost 100MHz increase. Not bad for a little card like this. As expected the memory came close to the rated 1GHz limit topping off at 995MHz ( 1990MHz Effective ). This card easily reached these speeds by upping them in 5Mhz increments each until it became unstable and then I backed off 1MHz at a time until I had no more issues or display problems."

Sapphire Radeon HD 4650 512MB OC @ Phoronix

"We previously had looked at the ATI Radeon HD 4550 and Radeon HD 4670, but if you are looking for a graphics card that's positioned between the two and costs less, there is the Radeon HD 4650. The Radeon HD 4650 is clocked the same as the Radeon HD 4550, but is based upon the RV730PRO GPU and is able to provide a bit more processing power than the lesser RV710 solution. Sapphire though manufactures a Radeon HD 4650 graphics card that operates well beyond the reference core and memory frequencies for the RV730PRO and sells it at a very affordable price.
