2008-10-02 Dark Sector Ps3 game
In a change to our normal PC Hardware reviews, PC Freaks & Geeks have decided to mix things up a little and have recently teamed up with a company called Body1.co.uk to bring you some exciting previews/reviews on the latest PS3 games to hit the market. Up for a long over due review/preview today is the third-person shooter Dark Sector, aptly described as being a cross-between GOW and Resident Evil 4, will this be one of those games you just can't walk away from until completion?
Or should we look elsewhere for a frag fest? As ever, our review should provide us with the answers to these questions...

Fifa09 (X360 & PS3) Review
Yep it is that time again, the time for FIFA to be updated with the release of the 09 Edition. With the constant battle for the Number 1 football game, does this year's Electronic Arts title kick Pro Evolution Soccer into oblivion?

Brothers In Arms - Hells Highway (PS3 & X360) Review
Gearbox's latest Brothers In Arms game draws from the experiences of the 502nd Parachute Infantry, 101st Airborne Division from World War II. The storyline is sure to deviate from the usual run of the mill first person shooter, but can the game bring fresh gameplay elements to the table as well?

Rock Band 2 (Xbox 360) review
Rock Band 2 brings 84 new titles to the table, and this time around they are all master tracks and it would be fair to say that this collection is probably the best yet. Not only do you get all master tracks but there is a new Guns N' Roses song called "Shacklers Revenge" which is pretty cool.

Left 4 Dead: We Played It!
Get ready for something…original. Left 4 Dead had a kiosk set up in PAX and we were fortunate enough to get our hands on it. The first thing you notice in the game is its constant attention to detail. The walls have phrases written on it that the developers said were there to help expand the story, each Zombie out of the hundreds looks unique, and the environments have such a texture to them that rivals that of anything released prior.

Stix 200 Wii-like PC Controller Review
"Today we are looking at the Stix 200 motion sensitive 2D video game controller. The Stix 200 promises to bring Wii-like controls to the PC.
The Stix 200 controller itself looks very much like the Wii Remote. It has the same white color and "D" shape design with a trigger on the bottom of the controller, two buttons on top, and a circle with four other buttons on it that is like a "D" pad on a normal gaming controller. The buttons are backlit with a green light and are touch sensitive so there are no real buttons to press other than the trigger underneath. All of the buttons are fully programmable."

Mercenaries 2: World In Flames (X360 & PS3) Review

Madden NFL 09 PSP Review
You don't have to be frozen, painted and shirtless to be a fan of football. But unless you're a huge fan, this game may not be what you're looking for. If you own previous versions, you will probably not find this year that much different. There is always some changes, if there were not someone would sue, but I don't think there's enough changes to be worth $40. If you're new to the PSP world and love football, giving this game a try would not be a bad idea. Yes, it has a few combos to learn, but that's if you play the advanced mode; on rookie mode the X button does for the most part everything. And don't forget about the difficulty settings and the slider adjustment options. From very easy to very hard, Madden has a skill level for all. Just keep in mind, if your video game shelf already has four or five madden copies, this year's version will not shock you much.

Too Human (Xbox 360) Review
Too Human is a game which has been getting considerable hype for quite some time. This hype is somewhat justified as the title is made by Silicon Knights who have made games such as Eternal Darkness and Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. High hopes indeed for this Xbox 360 exclusive, let's see how it fares.

Madden 09 (X360 & PS3) Review
Madden, the video game, has been running, every year, for as long as I can remember and amazingly, the title still seems fresh and exciting. Throughout the 20 years of development the game has received numerous nip n' tucks which this year reaches the pinnacle of execution on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

Siren Blood Curse - Playstation 3 Review
The horror survival genre has always had a certain group of gamers following it, in fact you might even say it has a cult following (no pun intended!). After reviewing the abysmal Alone In The Dark recently I had hoped that Siren: Blood Curse might go some way to redeeming my faith in this somewhat stale sector of the gaming market.

Space Invaders Extreme Nintendo DS
Space Invaders Extreme has taken one of the age old classics of the video game era, and ramped it up for the modern age. I could spend hours replaying this game, I just find I to be incredibly fun. One of my dreams has always been to be able to afford some of the old arcade style machines and build my own arcade room at home. In the meantime, Space Invaders Extreme for the DS does an admirable job of letting me get one step closer to that goal.

Sapphire Pure PC-AM2RX780
Since the Sapphire PC-AM2RX780 is an AMD chipset base board you can use either the BIOS for overclocking or the AMD Overclocking Utility. For the purpose of this review I testing overclocking on both options and ended up with the same result both ways. In the end the Sapphire board did not like any changes at all in the bus speed, not even 201Mhz, but this board was the most liberal I have had with the multiplier, allowing me to raise it up to 16x for a whopping 3.20GHz on the Phenom x4 9850 Black Box. The was achieved only by raising the VCore to 1.45v and Northbridge VID to 1.35v. This is one of the best overclockes I have achieved on this chip which goes to show you how well chipsets are evolving as time goes on.

Apevia X-Sniper G-Type Mid-tower Case Review
“Apevia has quite a large lineup of cases, from full-towers like the X-Jupiter we reviewed earlier to the diminutive X-Qpack2 MicroATX case. Even with such an extensive lineup, they show no signs of slowing down, releasing the X-Sniper mid-tower case. When we reviewed the X-Jupiter, we found it to be an excellent entry into the full-tower market. Can the X-Sniper do the same for mid-towers?”

Acer eMachines E510
“Computers can be used from many reasons but most recent are usage for quite elementary things. For all users with basic needs, computer purchasing can be a true nightmare. Acer Company tried to help you by launching series of cheaper models…”

Func C-Series Mouse Pad XL Review
It's tied up, 12-12, your teammates are dead and with a little work, you've fragged 4/5 members of the other team. 1 to go. Off to your right, you hear a footstep; you snap the mouse to the right across your mousepad, prepped to shoot and win, and... your mouse hits the floor. Game over. Mouse pads and their construction is important to computer users, whether for games or for design purposes, mousepads have two huge factors:
size and surface. Func Industries has released a new line of cloth mousepads, the C-series. How do they hold up? How are they against acrylic pads? Does their Dye Sublimation process really work better than normal dying techniques? We shall see.

Compatibility of Office Formats
“All applications save data into binary files in predefined way and order and those predefined ordered files, because of that, have characteristic file format. In purpose of easier identification, ever since DOS days, name of the file has additional three characters called file extension. In the beginning, text files were mostly saved in pure text format with DOC extension, which represented first three characters of the word document…”

Gigabyte 9800GT 512MB Video Card Review
With the 9800GT from Gigabyte, you get all of the features, performance and more of the 8800GT that was the top dog among the under $200 video card market a year ago, for a more affordable price of $120 online as of this writing. With performance that rivals the other cards at this price point, the GV-N98TZL-512H video card is a solid choice as it runs cooler than the competition, is shorter so it can fit in smaller cases and is priced near the same as the ATI HD 3870 online but has higher performance. Gigabyte has done an outstanding job on another front as their card supports the Ultra Durable features and HybridPower. Two of these cards in SLI should outperform a GTX280 or come close to it for a lower price meaning that this is a good deal

AMD Radeon HD 4670 512MB Review - Good gets cheaper
"The Radeon HD 4670 looks even better when we take that long-debated question of multi-GPU tactics into account. We saw scaling that reached into the 80% and above range with our pair of HD 4670s - something that is possible only because the GPU is most definitely the bottleneck in our gaming tests. The upgrade potential 3-6 months down the road for a user buying one of these GPUs today is compelling - $90 (and probably lower than that in the future) is a much easier cost to swallow for a sweet increase in gaming performance."

Razer Salmosa Gaming Mouse Review
Razer has always used interesting names for their gaming peripherals.
We’ve even reviewed a few of them. However the name for their latest gaming mouse, when pronounced, sounds more like a wonderful South Asian treat then a high performance pointing device. Still the Razer Salmosa represents an easy entry into the gaming peripheral market for those who want something that performs better then the $10 mouse that came with their system.

A-DATA Vitesta Gaming DDR2-800 4GB Kit
"Last week we had looked at the Corsair DHX 4GB DDR2-800MHz memory, which performed and overclocked very well and featured Corsair's exclusive Dual-Path Heat Xchange cooling technology. Today though we are looking at the more mainstream A-DATA Gaming DDR2-800 4GB Kit. This memory is less expensive than Corsair's DHX memory, but has higher latencies and simple heatspreaders. As you will find from reading this article, the overclocking potential is quite limited."
