BIOS Option Of The Week
01:50 AM MYT   |   Posted by: Dashken

Since 1999, we have been developing the BIOS Optimization Guide, affectionately known as the BOG. From a meager beginning of a single page, it now covers over 400 BIOS options. As old BOG readers will know, we started offering two editions of the BOG since Revision 8.0 - a simplified edition and the complete edition.

Normally, the complete edition is only available to subscribers who help sponsor the development of the guide through a small fee. However, that changes today! From now on, we will post a BIOS option from the complete edition of the BIOS Optimization Guide every Sunday.

Intel Core 2 Performance Comparison Guide
01:45 AM MYT   |   Posted by: Dashken

Specifications are all well and great, but can you really tell how much faster is one processor from another? Both Intel and AMD are trying to do just that with their model numbering scheme. But with over 30 SKUs, the Intel Core 2 family of processors has become a confusing bunch of numbers.

We begin a performance comparison project for the Intel Core 2 family of processors where we test and compare the Intel Core 2 processors’ performance in five different benchmarks. It will show you exactly where a higher clock speed would be more advantageous and where the number of processing cores is far more important, as well as situations where the processor itself won’t really matter much.

Here’s a quote from the guide :-
"In this article, we will be comparing the performance of several Intel Core 2 processors in five benchmarks - three game-based benchmarks and two application benchmarks. We hope to add on more and more results as we get hold of additional Core 2 processors over time. Let’s take a look at the Core 2 processors we have rounded up for this comparison."

Western Digital 300GB VelociRaptor Hard Drive Review Rev. 3.0
02:12 AM MYT   |   Posted by: Dashken

Western Digital may be marketing their new VelociRaptor family of high-speed hard drives as enterprise-class hard drives but they are also very popular with hardware enthusiasts who just cannot resist their 10,000 RPM spindle speed. Everything just seems a little faster when you use a hard drive that spins at such a high speed.

To cater to this exclusive group of enthusiasts, Western Digital first introduced the Raptor and Raptor X hard drives with capacities of 36 GB to 150 GB. These Raptors have now evolved into the next-generation Western Digital VelociRaptor hard drives, that not only boast twice the storage capacity but also managed to do it in a much smaller 2.5" drive form factor!

Let’s find out just how much faster this drive is compared to the 10K RPM WD Raptor X and 7200 RPM hard drives!

Here’re the latest updates in Revision 3.0 :-
- Added pictures and details of the WD VelociRaptor HLFS.
- Updated the review with some results of the WD VelociRaptor HLFS.

YouTube goes Widescreen
06:15 PM MYT   |   Posted by: ChampionLLY

Over the years we’ve heard a lot of feedback from you about what you’d like to change about YouTube, and the size of our video player is always top of mind. That’s why today we’re excited to announce a bigger YouTube player.

We’re expanding the width of the page to 960 pixels to better reflect the quality of the videos you create and the screens that you use to watch them. This new, wider player is in a widescreen aspect ratio which we hope will provide you with a cleaner, more powerful viewing experience. And don’t worry, your 4:3 aspect ratio videos will play just fine in this new player.

Google Layoffs - 10,000 Workers Affected
04:18 PM MYT   |   Posted by: Dashken

Google has been quietly laying off staff and up to 10,000 jobs could be on the chopping block according to sources. Since August, hundreds of employees have been laid off and there are reports that about 500 of them were recruiters for Google.

By law, Google is required to report layoffs publicly and with the SEC however, Google has managed to get around the legal requirement. In fact, one of the ways Google was able to meet Wall Street’s Q3 earnings expectations was by trimming “operational” expenses. (more..)
