Well sticking to what you know is good and always something you need to take into account. When overclocking a graphics card, you always first try via software to give you an indication and use as such. If you afterwards would just like the card to be overclocked without the overclocking software then you need to make a BIOS change and flash it to your card. Currently the memory timings don't make much difference any more as the memory is already clocked quite high as is...
