Such behavior might work on your GeForce 7900 GTX, but won't be the same for all cards really, not for even all GeForce 7900 GTX's. And what your friend concerns if he has a XFX GeForce 8800 GT with artifact issues at default clock speed set by XFX then you should do just one thing, you contact XFX and ask an RMA. This is a new card and XFX has great warranty in place to replace any faulty card...
