I now find that I get a little more performance with a metallic based compound such as AS5 or the thinner but greyish type coming with Koolance products as a mason also by trade. Ceramics and silicons have certain insulating properties also, and I am more inclined to use metal based, such as a copper one I'm about to try. If you intend to switch coolers frequently I recommend easier to cleanup products but if your not concerned and seek the best heat transfer, proven now, metallic is the way to go,
And as Raptor stated lapping is very important as I have also found with my Koolance CPU coolers, factory, mirror finish, high low areas so got to check anyway. I used a fine straight file and found litterally hollow areas until had removed the shiny stuff to the copper in a few spots, scratchy now but flat at least. I am also thinking more surface area better heat dissipation, especially if using a paste. So mirror it out but the rough areas potential to bond with setup of AS5. I've pulled the chip out the socket on the Intel P4 (Socket 478).
Oh, by the way and any of them are or maybe carcinogenic,(they can cause cancer) ask anyone ya know that works in an industrial atmosphere, so handling them as little as possible is prefered.
