Re:Upgrade to DirectX 10, what is involved exactly? - 2006/11/09 11:25 Just to clarify the only cards currently capable of running DirectX 10 are based on the G80 chip, so we are talking here about the GeForce 8800 GTS and GTX. So those are released since yesterday and you can buy these. All other card are not able to run DirectX 10 and can't be upgraded! So if you plan getting a Radeon X1600 PRO, you will need to buy a new card again if you want to have DirectX 10 to run.

Secondly currently only Vista will support DirectX 10 and so far there is no indication that Microsoft will do something to make XP compatible, but rather wants all of us to go for Vista and have DirectX 10 via that way, at least if your hardware supports it. So currently only the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 series of graphics card are compliant and able to support DirectX 10.

If your friend really wants a DirectX 10 card, then the only option he has is to wait or to have a bit more money to go for a GeForce 8800 GTS (or the more espensive GTX). But currently there is not yet any DirectX 10 real OS supporting it. Except the release candidates of Vista.
