Oblivion - 2005/02/11 12:04Am I the only one waiting for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion? I loved TESIII: Morrowind and this seems even better, graphically of course (although Morrowind was awesome looking at the time it came and still holds up pretty well, the screenshots provided by Bethesda does not do it justice AT ALL though), but also story- and gameplay-wise. As huge as the Morrowind world seemed to me, the earlier games in this series, Arena and Daggerfall, were even bigger and it seems Oblivion will be their size. If you have not played Morrowind I strongly recommend it. The RPG type gameplay provides a great way to carry these very extensive and flexible storylines. Check it out!

Re:Oblivion - 2005/02/11 14:17I may try it, but I like shooters.
Would it matter if I didn't play the previous games in the series?

Re:Oblivion - 2005/02/11 14:36No it would not matter, they have completely independent stories they just take place in the same world. It is kind of cool to familiarise one self with the world of tamriel and its lore and mythos though. It's not like the myst series where you HAVE to study the lore though, its just there... I'm sure you could get Morrowind for a very reasonable price these days too, you can check it out here and also read some customer reviews...

Re:Oblivion - 2005/02/11 14:45I think I will spend some time this weekend trying to find character model packs for Morrowind, there are plenty of fans doing really good work making add-ons and such for Morrowind as it comes with its own construction kit... And the only real flaw, although not at all a major one, is the lack of detail in the character models... And I know I have seen stuff people have made that's really beautiful work. In theory you could just replace the old models with newer more detailed ones and I'm sure it's been done by now...

Re:Oblivion - 2005/02/14 14:32Now, I realise nobody really cares but I think this is really interesting so I'll post it anyway ... I installed Morrowind the other day and I downloaded fan-produced "replacement packs" of textures (houses, ground, tapestries, creatures), face models, and trees and flora. These are basically just replacing the old duller textures with very high resolution ones and the difference is amazing. As soon as the server hosting the last replacement packs I need, fixing armour, clothes, and weapons, is back online I will download them too and I am sure the result will be astonishing. The difference is striking already, I will post some screens when it's done...
Well, this is interesting to me cause it presents some really interesting options of remastering games. I believe that many companies could make their products more attractive by offering upgrades of this sort, if not making the construction set available as Bethesda software has done with Morrowind... I know this can also be done and is being done with the Unreal series of games - the UnrealEd...
Although with pixel shader becoming a more prevalent element maybe this type of upgrades is already dying out - I have to assume that creating that type of textures involves extremely much more work than just plain textures...

Re:Oblivion - 2005/05/13 04:58Yeah, the screenshots for Oblivion are stunning, I just hope is has more direction and a stronger, well, sense of being guided through a story instead of a MMORPG type single player experience with boring quests. I mean, am I the only single player rpg lover left??? I want direction. I want interesting quests. I dont need to wonder from one end of a world to the other for hours and hours and hours trying to find these things.
