AOpen 6800NU fan speed... - 2005/01/29 09:50 Hi,

I recently replaced the original BIOS of my AOpen Aeolus 6800-DV128 with a different 6800NU BIOS...
http://whitebunny.demon.nl/hardware/chipset_nvidia.html
The original BIOS had incorrectly set clock rates and often caused total freezes of my system when running games and other 3D apps.

Using the new BIOS I don't get any more freezes. However I realized that the cooling fan of my card was running slower than with the original BIOS (it always slows down when I start Windows or X). With the original AOpen BIOS it used to speed up again when I ran 3D apps or games. This does not happen anymore...

Has anyone else experienced this kind of problem? Is there a 6800NU BIOS which correctly sets the fan speed? I don't even mind if the fan is running at full speed all the time, as long as it keeps the card from overheating.

I tried to use a modified version of my original BIOS with (what I think of as) correctly set clock rates (325MHz core/350MHz memory for both 2D and 3D). However this BIOS causes artifacts and crashes in Windows, and the temperature readings are higher than usual (which is strange because the 2D settings are identical to the original BIOS...). Probably my original BIOS wasn't read out correctly? Can that happen?

Re:AOpen 6800NU fan speed... - 2005/01/29 14:12 Well 325MHz is not possible.
I know, I know, the card came @ 325MHz but thats irrelivant. Somehow NVIDIA forgot that 325MHz is below core threshold.

Mod your original BIOS for 350MHz core 2D and 3D and all will be well.

Re:AOpen 6800NU fan speed... - 2005/01/29 18:20 Can you provide us your Original AOpen BIOS? Cause then we can have a look... And also the BIOS that you flashed it to?

You can mail em to me...

Re:AOpen 6800NU fan speed... - 2005/01/29 21:57 Okay, I will try that... But if it doesn't fix the fan speed problem, my card should be more likely to overheat with 350MHz than with 325MHz, right? If so, I probably have to check out some other BIOS'es to find one that sets there fan speed correctly...

Re:AOpen 6800NU fan speed... - 2005/01/29 23:14 Try the BIOS mod, it will fix your temp problem. When modding your BIOS change the vendor to "NVIDIA" so ExperTool fan control will install... For fan control install Gainward ExperTool v3.20.

This should work (I know this sounds really weird but please try it...)!

Re:AOpen 6800NU fan speed... - 2005/01/30 00:06 Hey, many thanks, modding to 350MHz did it (at least partly).

I ran an OpenGL app of my own with adjustable polygon count for testing. Without running anything 3D at all, temp is now at 53°C (was at 64°C before).

When I run my OpenGL testing app, it increases to about 64°C. Fan speed still doesn't increase when I run 3D apps, so I will try ExperTool next (and hope it solves the problem for Linux too...).

Update...
Okay, ExperTool lets me control the fan speed under Windows. However I realized that the temperature without running games is about 10°C higher under Windows than under Linux (provided that temp readings are correct).

Now my next problem is how to increase the fan speed under Linux...

Re:AOpen 6800NU fan speed... - 2005/01/30 00:41 Hahahaha!
I knew it would work.

Glad I could help, unfortunately I know nothing about Linux.

Re:AOpen 6800NU fan speed... - 2005/01/30 01:50 Well, I still get system shutdowns. But now, I'm pissed, and I don't care anymore.
My conclusion is... AOpen cards are crap. Don't buy AOpen hardware. They deliver cards with defective BIOSes and too weak fans.

I think I will continue use it until it catches fire, then buy a new one. And it won't be an AOpen card again... Maybe it's time to try ATI for a change...

Edit..
The system shutdown does not happen at a certain temperature... It seems to be random.

Hell, I coulda told you that from the beginning...

Sounds like you have a power problem of some sort. Flash it back to the stock BIOS (not yours, download it from this site) and RMA the card. Next time buy a card from a top tier manufacturer.

(This site isn't sponsored by AOpen is it? Mine is...! )

Re:AOpen 6800NU fan speed... - 2005/01/30 19:19 Well I think then we have some other brands that should also considered as crap... Well I for one woould contact AOpen. But well I can't cause I don't have a serial of a card. But if else I would see if they don't have a solution.

If else indeed just RMA it and you should get a new one... And then this will be equipped with the latest BIOS which should work much better.

And no AOpen doesn't sponsors the site. Although I would like that very much... Do you have a contact? Maybe they would be willing to run some advertisements...
