6800 Ultra Lock up on CS:S and AA2.2.1 - 2005/01/26 04:06 Every so often when I run CC or Americas Army 2.2.1 my video locks up after it connects to the server (sound FXs repeat and the screen freezes). I can Play HL2 without any problems (after the latest patch, but before - it did the same thing from the "quick save points"). It only happens after I connect to a game, or when I die and I'm in spectator mode. I can use "Windows+D" and minimize all windows and close out the program, but it'll do it agian (not all the time) unless I reboot. Normally both games run without lockups. It seems to happen more often if my computer has been running all day, and I come home from work to "do some killin".

System: all are @ stock
MSI K8N Neo2
A64 3500+ 130nm
1024 Samsung 2.5-3-3-8 T1
eVGA 6800 Ultra 425/1100 driver 66.93

I just got this mobo and cpu in DEC, and I have used the video card since OCT. The video card ran Desert Combat and BFV without any issues. I didn't get HL2 until after I got the new mobo. I flashed to the latest bios on the mobo and use the most current drivers off the MSI website.

1) Should I try other drivers for the VGA? ie: beta

2) Should I change my RAM to T2?

3) Should I underclock my VGA?

4) Should I run benchmarks and test where my problem is?

...I've done all of these except for #1. I only like to use currently approved nVidia drivers. I've ran AQ3, 3DMark 2001se-05 and the CS VST without any lockups. Has anyone else had the same issue. Could it be HL2/CS? The latest patch fixed it for single player, but not online multiplayer. I haven't been playing enough AA2.2.1 to make a guess. Or could it be my mobo? All my games ran fine on my old Asus A7N8X with the same VGA and RAM. I also reformated and "clean installed" Windows after adding the new parts.

Re:6800 Ultra Lock up on CS:S and AA2.2.1 - 2005/01/26 04:18 What are the ambient room temperatures? Are you running the rig with the side panels on or off? Reason I ask is it sounds like a thermal issue, how hot is the case and is it getting proper ventilation? Does it sit inside a closed desk or something?

If the system resources are low and you don't reboot that often, perhaps at the end of the day after the screen savers and other background processes, and who ever uses it before you get home - could be that the system just needs a cold boot before you start fraggin. Cold boot meaning turn the system off, wait 30 seconds power it back up.

I haven't had these issues un-less I am over-clocked to the hilt, but you say everything is stock so... Might be a driver issue, but I doubt it...

Loosen the timings on the RAM, Use a Higher CAS# Number. If you go lower you get tighter and cause timing problems.

Re:6800 Ultra Lock up on CS:S and AA2.2.1 - 2005/01/26 05:16 Just run 3dMark03 or 05 looping for several times just to see if your VGA locks
up.If its not locking up when bencmarking or when you play games in single
player then for sure its not your VGA.Or if you only having problems with online
gaming then something it has to do with your modem maybe conflicting with another device or even with your VGA in your system.Just check device manager
for conflicts.I think that if your 6800Ultra having the problem then your lockups
would be only in your screen and not also in your sound as you already mention
for sound looping.

Re:6800 Ultra Lock up on CS:S and AA2.2.1 - 2005/01/26 06:09 I'm using 5 case fans, and my case has mesh panels, so I think it's getting enough air flow.

Temps:

CPU 31c idle and 48 load

VGA 51c idle and 66c load @ stock
- 51c idle and 71c load when overclocked 450/1100

PCB 29c

Room 25c

It may be cooling, but why does it run fine in sigle player? I can loop 3DMark05 @ 434/1150 without issues. Could it be my NIC on the mobo? I disabled the other NIC through Windows. Maybe I'll disable it in the bios too. I think it's either the drivers for the mobo or CS (not HL2). The latest patch fixed the same bug for single player on HL2 when loading from a save point (screen lockup and looping sound). But it is funny that CS is doing the exact same bug when connecting to a game. And it's not a complete LOCKUP either. I can exit into desktop. And sometimes I can let it sit for a minute or two and it will fix itself and let me keep playing. I'm pretty sure, now after thinking about it, that it isn't the VGA. Most 6800 Ultras peak at 71c under an hour of load. It's not the PSU, it's 500w with 26a on the 12v rail.

If it is CS, should I try a clean install and update with HL2? I really don't want to do that... yuk

Thanks for your input. I'll keep the forum posted on any updates.
